I would suggest that both of these studies were taken in the mid to late 1850's possibly just creeping into the early years of 1860. Both men are dressed in similar attire and both are sporting a Newgate frill which was worn during the 1850's. The piece of furniture that they are leaning on, although of different design, would appear to be a Davenport.
