Skene (Springhill) Cemeteries?
« on: Sunday 05 April 09 06:23 UTC (UK) »

I just verified death of a 3rd grt grandfather, William Manson, on 24 Mar 1896 in the "Deaths in the Parish of Skene in the County of Aberdeen" registrations.  The "where died" column states "Springhill, Skene".

His wife,  Margaret (Shand) Manson, had died 10 years earlier.  I would like to find out where they are buried.

I am in the U.S.  Any ideas?  Was Springhill likely to be the name of a farm, or just a small community within the parish?

Thanks,

Nick

Hi Nick. They are likely to be buried at Kirkton of Skene where the Parish Church is situated.  The Aberdeen & N.E. Scotland FHS are in the process of transcribing the names in the North-East of Scotland churchyards but I'm not sure if Kirkton of Skene has been done.  I suggest that you contact them.
Springhill is a farm and here is the navigation process to find it:  Log on to
www.nls.uk/collections/maps/index.html then:
View map images
Ordnance Survey maps, 1847-1930
Six inch to the mile, 1st edition - 1843-1882
By zoomable map of Scotland with gazetteers of place names for searching
County: Aberdeen
Parish: Skene
Place name: Springhill
Choose Springhill, Aberd NJ 8005

You'll find it a little below and to the right of Loch of Skene.  You can also zoom in to get a much larger view of it.

Hi Nick

Springhill is most likely to be a farm in the parish of Skene.  If you go to www.abdnet.co.uk/burialgrounds you will get a map of the north east.  Zoom into the area just west of Aberdeen around Westhill.  Just south west of there you will find a marker for Echt (New).  In the list of surnames there is 1 Manson and 1 Shand.  This may be who you are looking for.  The MI booklet can be bought from Aberdeen & North East Scotland FHS at anesfhs.org.uk.  Hope this helps.

Sorry to mislead you with the last message.  I've checked the MI surname search on www.anesfhs.org.uk and the Manson/Shand MIs in Echt(new) are not the ones you are looking for.

Isles & MeeToo,

Thank you for the responses.  I will follow your links to see what I can discover, as well as try to contact the FHS.

This family was born and bred in Aberdeen (although Wm's father probably came from Caithness, and Manson appears to be an Orkney name originally - contraction of Magnuson).

William took his family to Orkney in 1850s and then he and wife and some kids returned to Aberdeen.  My line stayed in Orkney until my GGF migrated to Canada in 1891.
