Hi,
Seeking info. on Phillis Rule born Berwick, married James Armstrong 14.4.1826 Berwick. Parents George Rule and Margaret - . Phillis and James Armstrong had only 2 children, I think, Margaret, b 6.4.1827 and Robert b. 19.3.1829.
Any help to confirm or not would be great. Cheers Kerry

Kerry,
The SMI doesn't have the marriage. Are you sure the Berwick in question is the small village in Sussex? What's your source?
Armstrong in not a common name in Sussex - only 40 occurrences in the whole of the SMI. It's more common in the North - around Berwick-upon-Tweed, say. Sue's 1851 household looks very much to be that of the two children, and supports the idea that Sussex is not the correct location.

Hi Stovepipe and Sue,
Yes you are absolutely correct - Robert was born Berwick-upon-Tweed. Sitting over here in Oz I'm a little(or a lot) unsure/unfamiliar with the geography of England. Robert's marriage cert. in Oz lists his birth place as Berwick-upon-Tweed. He married in the goldfields of Australia. Thanks so far, I guess this new info. puts a whole new light on the search. Cheers, Kerry

They are in Castlegate, Berwick in 1871 as well, still no sign of a husband.
Still there in 1881 with daughter Phillis, but she is now a widow. Ditto for 1891, and still going in 1901.

Hi Sue, Stovepipe and Ian,
This info has thrown me - Always believed Robert's parents to be James Armstrong and Phillis Rule, so mother Elizabeth in 1841 doesn't fit. Robert's marriage cert.(in Ballarat Oz.) lists his parents as James Armstrong and Phillis Rule. Also lists his birth place as Berwick-on-Tweed. James ocupation was listed as Mariner.
Although the Margaret Hume does seem to fit as Robert's sister- date wise and also carrying on the family name of 'Phillis' to her daughter.
Can I impose on you to do a little more digging,
Cheers Kerry

Hi Kerry
I also have a Christian Armstrong in my tree, she was born in Scotland in 1805 and married John Blake, their daughter also called Christian Armstrong Blake was born in Northumberland (Greenhaugh) in 1834.
Do you think it is safe to say this is more than just a coincidence? I wouldnt have though Christian Armstrong would be a common name.
Look forward to your thoughts
Amanda
