Balcombe Family History
« on: Sunday 05 April 09 10:51 UTC (UK) »

Hi All

I have received an e-mail for help concerning the Balcombe family of Sussex from a lady in Australia - and I know you Sussex researchers will have the answers.
I have already supplied her with the various marriage entries from various indexes, mostly from around the Laughton area.

I am interested in finding the Siblings of Richard Balcombe 1769 who married Harriet Shoesmith and then Harriet Ford. His parents were John Balcombe 1741 and Mary Pollard 1744.

One of their daughters, Mary Married a William Balcombe who I believe may have been a cousin as it seems to have been common to marry within the family.

Williams parents were Thomas Balcombe 1765 and Elizabeth Funnell.

I am also interested in William Balcombe 1770 and Sarah c 1770.

They ended up in Australia via the Sussex Assizes

Kerry
the area I am interested in is around Laughton, my GG Grandfather Thomas Balcombe was born there in 1816 and transported to Australia as a convict. Marriage and Babtism records were found in the Jireh Chappel in Lewes. I now want to find his fathers siblings or cousins to see if there is any connection between two families of Balcombes who came to Australia.

Hi mum mum and welcome to Rootschat  Cheesy

Hopefully you will get the answers you are looking for and that confirms to me that Ticehurst is too far out.

The marriage ofJohn and Mary Pollard was at Buxted so I had a look at Buxted on the Hugh Wallis site http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountySussex.htm#B

Unfortunately only managed to find one baptism that fits

Elizabeth Balcomb baptised on 1 March 1767 at Buxted, Sussex daughter of John and Mary.

Hi Jenny

Welcome to Rootschat and especially the Sussex Boards which we believe is one of the best

Glad that you found your way to us, its a lot easier than e-mails and there are lots of knowledgable people on here

Maybe you can give us a bit more info on your Balcombe names that came to Australia and then we will try to work backwards from there

Anyway, as I said earlier - nice to have you on board

Thomas Balcombe born 1816 in Laughton Sussex, transported to Australia in 1842. His parents were Richard Balcombe 1769 and Harriett Ford who was Richard's second wife.

Richard's paents were John Balcombe 1741 and Mary Pollard 1744, married in Buxstead.

The other convict of interest is George Melancthon Balcombe 1815- 1888 who was transported to Australia in 1837 aboard the "Mangles " from Surrey. His parents were James Balcombe 1791 and Mary Buckland. James parents william Balcombe 1770 and Sarah.

James Balcomb married Mary Buckland at Tandridge, Surrey on 12 October 1814.  He was from Tandridge and she was from Horne, Surrey.

I didn't manage to find a marriage for William and Sarah in Surrey, so presume they married in Sussex? or elsewhere?

Hi Kerry,
I dont know much at all about William and Sarah, my suspician is that william may have been a brother or cousin of Richard 1769 from Laughton Sussex. Perhaps he was born in Sussex, I will chick again on my Ancestry tree to see if there is any more.

Re balcombes in sussex.
Dont rule out Ticehurst, I just found on Family Search that William Balcombe 1799 was born in ticehurst.
He married my GG Grandfather's sister Mary Balcombe 1800 who was born in Laughton, I'm guessing that these two may have been cousins.

Actually I thought that whilst laying in bed last night, they must all be connected and I wonder if they came from Balcombe in West Sussex originally!

If you look at the hugh wallis I gave you, there were some Balcombs in Ticehurst I believe.

Thanks Kerry,
I have looked through the family search website and managed to find a few extra marriages for children of the people I am looking for. I think the records that I am after have not been transcribed and are not available on the internet.
If anyone finds any Balcombes while looking for their own ancestors I would appreciate the information.
