Hi Jenny
Re your letter on the Mary Buckley post, my interest in the Balcombe line comes to a full stop at present with Thomas Balcombe b 1809 Newhaven to John Balcombe & Mary Balcombe nee Johnson m 1809 Newhaven. I feel sure that John probably had brothers and sisters but as yet I've been unable to prove any.

I've had some great help on this forum over the months, hope you do also, I shall watch with interest, Good luck.

A John Balcombe described as a Customs Officer is subject of a Bastardy order, being the father of a girl born to Phoebe Geering of Newhaven 6/5/1809. A year later he is described as a labourer and a warrant issued for arrears of £5/7/6 on the affiliation order.
Might be your man.. There  is also a Richard and Thomas  Balcombe of Newhaven described as Privates in the  Artillery Volunteers in 1800. Pete

From the 1851 census, Richard Senior was 77 so 86 in 1860 or there is a Richard (grandson)  4 in 1851 so 13 in 1860, Pete

Thanks Pete and Sean,

The Phoebe Geering thing has intrigued my cousin and myself for a while now, there does seem to be a number of same names about, could it be John of John & Mary Johnson, John of John & Charity Hilton, or a different one altogether, perhaps we'll never find out, I've never managed to find any more about Phoebe or her child.

If Richard who is on the M.I. was indeed 86yrs in 1860 he may be
1773 Balcomb Richard s of John & Mary.                   And may be brother to
1769 Baucombe John  s of John & Mary

Found in Arlington Baptism Transcripts.  John fits in very well with John Balcombe who married Mary Johnson 7 feb 1809 Newhaven and who died 25 april 1847 age 77 Newhaven.

I can't prove at present any of this but it does fit together nicely.

While here can I just ask, on the Death cert for John B above, in column 7 is written Joseph Balcombe present at death, Newhaven.  I have never managed to find a connection with Joseph and this branch of the Balcombe family, if anyone can I would be grateful.

Thanks again,
David.
