Rhodesia, Worksop
« on: Sunday 05 April 09 23:39 UTC (UK) »

Hi All,

I have a relative who died in 1967 and in his obituary in the Derbyshire Times, it says that his daughter died two years before him (so 1965) and in Rhodesia. Now, first instincts is the Rhodesia that is now Zambia but after a google search i came across a small village in Worksop called Rhodesia, does anyone know anything about this village? Does it have a church and cemetery? If it doesn't, where would the closest cemetery be?

Sadly, it is a woman in question, Ruth Ann Hawkins, and i don't know as yet if she married, so her surname may be different, she is certainly proving to be a hard person to track down!

Any help with this village would be gratefully received.

Hi Ally,

A letter to the Editor of the Worksop Guardian, which also covers the Rhodesia area, might produce a result.

Hi,

I seem to remember that there is a Methodist Chapel there, next to a fish and chip shop!

Hope that helps!

As far as i know...
There isn't a churchyard or Cemetery in Rhodesia.
Rhodesia is just outside Worksop (like a suburb) - there is a nearby church in Shireoaks... but being so close to worksop - literally now "Joined" - most people are buried in Either the Worksop Priory Churchyard, in the Retford Road "New" cemetery".
Given the Date 1967 - i am 99% sure it will be found in The Retford Road Cemetery in Worksop.
My best advise is to telephone Bassetlaw District Council, which is situated in The Queens Buildings, Potter Street, Worksop.
they will give you the phone number of a chap
who has access to these records(they are kept in offices in Carlton)
i know for a fact - he will most probably do you a look up - becauses the Retford Road records can only be seen by appointments only
The Derbyshire times are available at Chesterfield.

If she was a resident of rhodesia - also probable in the worksop Guardian

Hope this helps

And just in case you do get sent back to Africa, both you and Tom from Oz are correct. The old Rhodesia (actually Rhodesia and Nyasaland) was a big country. Northern Rhodesia became Zambia. Southern Rhodesia became Zimbabwe.

Hi Mike

I think we are splitting hairs here.

When the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland broke up, you are quite right an AREA became known as Northern Rhodesia which included Zambia, Tanzania and the then Nyasaland et al.  Nyasaland when it gained independence became Malawi.

Hi,   Shireoaks Church is the nearest.  Not sure of the name of the one on Gateford Rd Worksop thats used by people from Rhodesia. Notts. Most burials around there are done at Manton Cemetery Retford Rd Worksop.  Doubt if they'd be buried Shireoaks..    See if I can come up with anything. Hope it helps. gales

The church on Gateford Road is St John's The evangelist, However it doesn't nor ever has had a cemetery - all the funerals undertaken here have been buried either behind the church in Worksop priory (it has an "Extended Cemetery" - but for the time frame we are looking for it will be Retford Road.
Hope this helps
Worksop Library'e records finish just before 1900 .... so you need to get in contact with The town hall - for that phone number
My relatives died in Rhodesia c.1925 and i had a few died on gateford road, the funeral was undertaken at st john's , the burials at Retford Road for both sets -  their records for burial was accessed through them.
Hope this helps
