have you found a marriage for Margaret & Timothy? Do you know if Margaret b. 1909 is the oldest child? What address was she born at?
I can see another daughter registered
Nelly Mahoney sept qtr 1911 Merthyr Tydfil vol 11a pg 1686 mother's maiden name Hutchings

Do you have either Timothy or Margaret on the 1901 census?

It might be that you have to wait for the 1911 census for Glamorgan to come online which will be sometime this year - being scanned around this time. Then you will be able to check birth places of the parents.

She was born at11 Upper Taff Street Caerew Merthyr I have found Timothy at Wool Street in 1901 with his parents John and Margaret and again in 1881 at 19 Lower Taff Street  There are a few Mary Hutchings in the area so I am not sure which one is right There is a Timothy Mahoney who married 1908 in Merthyr but it was to Mary Kingdom

I'd looked at that Timothy. If he married someone of similar age, it doesn't give much scope for a previous marriage, does it? I wonder if it's a case of her marrying under a stepfather's name?

The 1911 census will help with her place of birth and should be with us within the next few months. Can you hold on until then?

it's your choice. Wait for the 1911 or buy some more certificates to see if they help.

There's more than one Timothy Mahoney whose birth is registered in Merthyr.

There's one in Dowlais son of Philip & Catherine, bricklayer's labourer RG13/5029 folio 90 pg 28. Also a son of Cornelius who I can't see in 1901.

Hi both  Smiley

Is does look like a strange coincidence, doesn't it, when you look at Mahoney births with mother's maiden name Kingdom (all Cardiff) :

Kathleen Dec 1913
Timothy J Dec 1915
Doreen Dec 1919 (mother's name is shown as Kingdon)
John 1922
James A 1927
Betty J 1930
Violet M 1931

Huh

Well, those birth regs look interesting. I've found registrations for some of the names in Merthyr, but that's a far higher success rate. Also, I found a Nellie with mother's maiden name Hutchings and that wasn't on the list. Now, there are at least 3 Timothy Mahoneys on the census in Merthyr. There's the 1908 marriage, one registered Newport in 1914 to Grimaldi, and another registered Merthyr in 1914 to Murphy.

I think I'd be tempted to get that 1908 marriage and/or one of the Cardiff registered births to check the details.

There's more than one Margaret Mahoney birth reg as well - couple in Cardiff march qtr 1910 vol 11a pg 371, march qtr 1911 vol 11a pg 392. How sure are you that you have the correct birth cert for Margaret? You may have been really unlucky and found another Margaret daughter of another Timothy. When & where did she die? Dates of birth are on the index from 1984.

Just a thought.
On freebmd there is a marriage
Jane Hutchins  on the same page as a William Kingdon
Sep qtr 1899 Pontypridd 11a 910

There are a couple of Mary Hutchings/Hutchins/Hitchins births in Pontypridd in the few years prior to this date.

Could Mary have been before marriage of the man she considered her father and named on her marriage certificate - so using his name and then when registering births of children - depending on who registered them - went by either name.

I considered that too, Welshjo!!  Cheesy

Tried to follow it up but this Jane was shown as only 23 in 1901 and I couldn't ID her on earlier censuses to check her age  Sad

George Hitchins head mar 30 coal miner b. Aberdare
Eliza wife 31 b. Llangynwd
Elizabeth M dau 7 b. Aberdare
William son 5 b. Aberdare
Jane dau 2 b. Aberdare
David Jones boarder 23 coal miner b. Ystradgynlais

George remarries june qtr 1884 Pontypridd vol 11a pg 603

1891 16 Pleasant Hill, Home Penrhys, Tylorstown with Ferndale
George Hitchings head mar 43 coal miner b. Hirwain
Catherine wife 41 b. Treforest
Cath Anne dau 20 b. Abernant
William son 15 coal miner b. Cwmbach
Willie son 13 coal miner b. Cwmbach
Jane dau 12 b. Cwmbach
Maggie dau 11 b. Aberdare
Hannah dau 10 b. Abernant
Hannah Richards mother widow 66(?) b. Morriston

George remarries june qtr 1900 Pontypridd vol 11a pg 849 with Frances Jones on the same page

Jane Kingdom is in Ferndale in 1901. But it could be a coincidence.
