Death at sea
« on: Monday 06 April 09 19:36 UTC (UK) »

Hi just wondering if someone drowns at sea do they still get a death cert if the body is not found?
My gr gr uncle,Charles Doherty was a steam ship stoker and all that the family know about his death is that he drowned and that at the time of his death was working on a coaster.
He died between 1905(when he married Mary Anne Fulton in Glasgow) and 1911 as his wife is on the census for Ballyargus,Redcastle Inishowen as a widow and visitor of his parents household.

Any help or advice would be gratefully appreciated!

Hello Annette,An interesting question. As far as I know if the body was never found,no standered Death Cert would be available. The Death Cert: is a legal document which gives precise details of the cause of death, after assessment by a Physician that cannot be the case if the body is not available

In the Tragedy of the Titanic some of their loved ones could not  inherit their husbands estate because there was no body to confirm they were deceased.

Thanks leprechaun for your reply.
Not sure wether his body was found or not.Just wondering in case it was located do I contact the relevant district where he was living or do I contact the GRO in Roscommon?

Thanks,Annette

have you tried the familysearch Irish Civil index at : http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=2;t=searchable;c=1408347

if you find possible details on there  you can order a research cert from the the GRO (www.groireland.ie) using the reference numbers.

if no body is recovered I believe the case has to go to court to have the missing person declared dead so that probate etc can proceed. This usually takes a number of years (7 I think..) but in the case of a presumed accident at sea I think this could be shorter. Maybe a local newspaper would have details of the accident, inquest or later court case...

Shanew you are ccorrect as my late uncle was washed overboard by freak waves while crossing from his ship to another oneabout30 years ago. My aunt had to wait 7years to declare him dead by order of the court.  Once the court declared him dead, a death cert was issued for him.
