Just missing a census and a birth
« on: Monday 06 April 09 23:00 UTC (UK) »

I've been trying to explore my Nightingale ancestors. I know that:-

George Nightingale
1826   Born in Newington, Surrey
1841   Living at Dover Street, Newington. George (15) an apprentice linen draper from Newington.
1843   Married Mary Ann Tarrant March 1843. St George, Southwark. Vol 4, page 331
1851 ??
1858    Death of Mary Ann. September 1858. Greenwich 1d .
1861   Married Mary Laurance Ashton in March 1861. West London vol 1c page 103
1861   Living at 20 Great Dover St, Newington. George (38, a draper from Middlesex) living with his wife Mary L (26, from Somerset) and 2 children, both born in Surrey Arthur (9), Joseph (5).
1861   Living at Ockham Industrial School, Ockham, Guildford. Elizabeth (13) living with many pupils including George Nightingale (11) and Mary Nightingale (15). All born in London.
1871   Living at 20 Great Dover Street, St Mary Newington. George (48, a widower, born in Finchley, a draper and tailor) living with 3 children George (21, an assistant), Joseph (16, an assistant), Florence (3). All 3 born in Newington, Surrey.
and so on after

but I cannot find the 1851 census which would prove Mary was a sister and where Mary Ann Tarrant came from. I also cannot find George's birth. I've only just found the marriage reference so will order the certificate to give me his fathers name I hope but in the meantime if anyone can help it would be appreciated.

many thanks
Gavin.

Hi Gavin

Sorry, I haven't found them in 1851  Cry,  but boy, have left a few holes around Newington in the dig!

George NIGHTINGALE's 's neighbour in 1861 & 1871 was one Henry R SILVESTER, an  Attorney/Solicitorb abt 1807,  living at at 19 Gt Dover St.

In 1841, Henry is on the same street - though this  census doesn't have house numbers - in Newington at:
HO107 / Piece 1065 / Book: 3 / Folio: 42 /  Page 31
And, as you have already found, George NiIGHTINGALE 15, Apprentice Draper,  is not too far away, same street:
HO107 / Piece 1065 / Book: 3 / Folio: 41 /  Page 29

In 1851, Henry R SILVESTER is still at 19 Gt Dover Court on:
HO107; Piece: 1566 /  Folio: 180 /  Page: 44/

Nr 20 is occupied by the following
Head: William GIBBIN (alone)
Head: Jane TURNER (alone)
Head: William COOPER (alone)
Head: William PARKER & Wife & Servant
Head: William WHYLOCK (alone)

All evidence points to George being in Newington in 1851, if not on Gt Dover St.

I've searched and searched Piece 1566, under the barest of paremeters (incase they have been incorrectly lumped under another surname), and have looked at every household listed on Dover Street. Nada!! Perhaps they are in Newington on another piece (not sure if it went over more than one piece?)

I was reading another of your posts, (the Henry TARRANT one) and it seems the connection to Dover St is also on that side too, as well as Arthur (b 1851) going on to marry an Elizabeth TARRANT?

I can't see any NIGHTINGALE events (birth or death) in Newington right on Census 1851 time, which might pre-empt them getting missed of the census. Do you know if anything happened in the TARRANT family around that time, though?

I suppose, the only thing to try at this stage, would be to get the birth certificate of Arthur, to see at what address he was born and go from there?

Cheers

Hi Ambly

Many thanks for all of your efforts - greatly appreciated. Your dig looks a lot more thorough than mine and still we cannot find him - but I like your idea of getting Arthur's birth certificate - I'll follow up on that and will post the answer so that part of the riddle is answered  Smiley

Henry B Tarrant who married Elizabeth Nightingale is my direct ancestor. The marriage certificate places them both in Great Dover Street at the time of the marriage but no house number - so possibly he was lodging in their house, another house or there as a guest. Interestingly Henry B Tarrant (from Andover) married Elizabeth Nightingale in 1870 in London , then his sister Elizabeth Tarrant married her brother Arthur Nightingale in 1884 in Andover after he had lived with them for a while. But to add some fun, Elizabeth's and Arthur's mother was Mary Ann Tarrant! So was she related to Henry and Elizabeth's father Henry? Haven't got a clue but it's another riddle I'm trying to solve! Hence why I'm trying to trace Mary Ann's birthplace and parents also.

thanks again
Gavin Tarrant
