Welcome to this weeks Scavenger Hunt which promises to be an interesting one with UK, NZ and Australia involved.
Good Luck and Good Hunting.

******************************
John and Mary SMITH were my late father’s maternal grandparents and are my brickwall. They had ten children, two died in infancy, the others all grew up and married. There are 4 living grandchildren, all over 80 years old. There is no record of the marriage of John to Mary, and it is likely that they fibbed about it, as Mary had previously married. Both died in Sydney NSW Australia, but they were both born in England, and had both lived in New Zealand.
My main interest is in trying to figure out when/where either of them were born, and where they grew up. Various cousins and I have downloaded many census records, and obtained many GRO certificates. But we have basically NOT advanced the plot that our parents knew from their own childhoods spent in the company of John and Mary. Rather we have just accumulated lots of supporting information about their NSW lives. In the case of John Smith, we are missing his first 40 years, while in Mary’s case we are missing her first 20 years.
From various NSW BDM certificates we know:
John Smith was born in Ely, Cambridgeshire England. In November 1883 he was aged 41. In September 1891 he was aged 51. In May 1897 he was aged 58. In July 1928 he was aged 86. On all those documents his occupation is noted as “labourer”.
Mary Smith was born Mary Ann HUNT in Manchester, Lancashire England. In November 1883 she was aged 30. In September 1891 she was aged 38. In May 1897 she was aged 44. In July 1930 she was aged 77.
John Smith’s death registration (July 1928) gives his parents as John Smith, a farmer and Ann Ellington. On the birth certificates of the youngest seven children (1886, 1888, 1890, 1891, 1892, 1895, 1897), John Smith’s name is noted as John Ellington Smith.
Mary Smith’s death registration (July 1930) gives her parents as Hartley Hunt, a farmer and Mary Dickens. On all the NSW birth certificates for her children her full name, Mary Ann Hunt is recorded.
If there is a "naming" pattern to their children, then the following may help: Laura b 1883, Nellie b 1885, Thomas Hartley b 1886, Mary Jane b 1888, Reuben b 1890, Rebecca b 1891, Annie b 1895 and Rachel b 1897. There was an un-named daughter born and died before Laura, and an un-named son born and died November 1892.
I have lots of other bits and pieces of information, including the following: Mary Ann Hunt emigrated from England to Wellington NZ on The Douglas, arriving Sept 1873. She was single, aged 20 and from Lancashire. Among the passengers were Mr and Mrs Thomas Brazier Brattle. In Feb 1877, at the Buckley St Wellington home of Thomas Brazier Brattle, there was a Methodist marriage service, and the bride was Mary Ann HUNT. The groom was Christopher Taylor. This matches up with oral history that comes from my late father, and is confirmed by several of those 4 living grandchildren.
Despite many years (decades) of searching by several generations, none of us have ever found any information about their lives in England, nor how they got to Australia. We do know from John Smith’s death registration that he had lived in NSW for 46 years. July 1928 minus 46 years suggests he arrived about 1880. We do know from Mary Smith’s death registration that she had lived in NSW for 53 years. July 1930 minus 53 years suggests she arrived about 1877.
We also know that both John and Mary Smith's accents were difficult to understand by their grand-children.
The NSW Archives have many passenger records, but despite much searching, we have not found the arrival (either as a couple, or as individuals travelling at different times) of either of them in NSW. Nor have we found the arrival of John Smith into NZ.
The couple were both interred in the Rookwood Cemetery, C of E, and despite “knowing” there was never any headstone, we have searched for one – there is none.
Any clues will be much appreciated, but please don’t waste your energies for it is fast approaching Easter, and your own families deserve your company.

Hi and Thanks to Rootschat for this opportunity. I am in NSW Australia, but my OH has organised things so I can be online into the wee hours of each morning (its 8:33 pm Tuesday here). Thanks again, and I will try to add comments as we progress through this John and Mary Smith brickall. Cheers MA

Hi Toni, sorry but not that family, although I do have email contact with descendants of Abraham's family. But, on other hand, if you spot John and Lucy SMITH and their lot, well I have followed that up as far as 1871, for John and Lucy were at Black Dike and then disappear, but their children are with James Smith (grandfather) at Newton. There are non identical twins to John and Lucy. Cheers, MA

HI All, Ta Kiwihalfpint, for your good wishes. Ta kansar, that's the closest I have ever got to see his middle name - first time I know he used it was in 1886. Ta Spidermonkey, could you let me know a bit more of a clue please, I have ancestry but its not throwing that entry up at me Ta Toni, you know I have 13 pages of one line entries for possible births, and similar list for census possible sightings. Cheers, all MA
