lookup req. 1891 census Snaith, Goole
« on: Friday 18 February 05 20:21 UTC (UK) »

Greetings and thankyou to all of you wonderful people offering your time!

I am trying to locate Alice Mary BANKS and her father James BANKS who was a policeman.  At the time of her marriage in 1900, her address was listed as East Lowick, Snaith in the District of Goole.

Thank you,

Lynda in Canada

Hi
How old was she at marriage?    Who did she marry?    If you find her in 1901 it will give a birth place.    I had a quick look but did not have enough information to decide between the many Alice Banks.      Let me know a bit more and I will look again.

Thank you Andrea - sure appreciate your help!

Alice Banks was 19 years old when she married Ashley Williams in 1900 so she should be born c1881.  Her father (James Banks) was already deceased at the time of her marriage, I do not have a death date for him.  Ashley Williams will not appear as he would still be residing in Lancashire at the time of the 1891 census.   Just went through all of my paperwork and find that Alice has a middle name of Mary listed on a child's birth certificate.  Tragically, she died giving birth to him on the 27th of June 1904.  At that time they resided in Pollington (Snaith, Goole, York).

I'm a newbie at research in the UK.  Do your death certificates give the place of birth?

Hi
Sorry but I cannot find her.  Very odd as you would think that a name like Ashley Williams was quite rare so that he would show up in the census but he doesn't - not in any year.    How old was he?   How do you know he was from Lancashire?    Who was his father?  Alice's age at death is given as 22 so I searched the births from 1881 - 83 to see if I could find a suitable Alice Mary Banks and failed. (used 1837online.com - useful and not too expensive).  I see that at marriage she is only Alice - no Mary on that record so maybe not on thebirth either.
Death certificates at that time do not show place of birth.  In fact they are not very useful.  They give the date, place and cause of death and age (often wrong) and the name and address of the informant.   The reference is Sep 1904 Goole 9c 555 if you want to order it - via 18370nline.

The 1881 census is free on familysearch.org but I expect you know that.
It might be worth a long search for a James who is a policeman on that.

Thank you Andrea for trying.   I went onto the 1901 census index as you suggested and tried every conceivable search last night and could not find either of them.   I suppose it is possible that they were out of the country at the time? Ashley does seem to be a very uncommon name.   We did locate him on the 1881 Census when he was only 6 living in his father's house in Combe Down, Monckton Combe, Somerset.  I think he should appear there in 1891 but I have not yet posted a request on that list for him.   I do not know when or why he moved to Yorkshire, the rest of the Williams family did not.   I have his marriage certificate and the birth certificate of his son which both have Yorkshire as a location.  His ties to Yorkshire couldn't have been that strong as after his wife died in childbirth (1904) he moved to his grandfather's homeland in Wales!   I will question his gradnddaughter further and see if she can come up with anything.  Really appreciate the time and effort you put into the request!  Thank you

If you can afford it it is well worth paying for ancestry.co.uk
- otherwise keep asking and I will look them up!
A brilliant resource

Andrea,

Thank you so much for providing the 1891 lookup.  There are three further children I didn't know about!
I might very well consider ancestry.co.uk but first I need to sort out and record all of this wonderful information.  Cheesy  A pleasant task I must say.  Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers on Rootschat!!
