c/o Standard Bank, South Africa???
« on: Tuesday 07 April 09 21:28 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

In 1928, Beatrice Mary Chittleburgh, arrived in London on board the "City of Alexandria" She was described as a nurse, but her proposed address in the UK was given as c/o Standard Bank, SA, 11 Clements Lane.

A number of other people with varying occupations also gave this as their address. Would anyone know why a bank would be given as someone's address?

Many thanks

I'm guessing here:

If you are moving from one country to another, but don't yet know where your address in the destination country, will be, then you will need need a post restante address, where post could be sent to.

If you are already in the country, then you can (usually) fix this up with the Post Office, so that that letters get delivered "c/o Post Office, MyTown", but if not, then perhaps a Bank with branches in both countries, or with an affiliated partner Bank in the destination country, might offer this as a service ?

"c/o Standard Bank, SA, 11 Clements Lane" suggests that the Standard Bank has branches in London and South Africa.
