David Roger born 12 Feb 1735 Bendochy
« on: Wednesday 08 April 09 09:14 UTC (UK) »

I have traced my ancestors back to a marriage in 1772 of David Roger and Anne Bruce.  Their children were all born either in Errol or Bankfoot.

A likely candidate for the parents of this David are William Roger and Janet Gellatlay from Coupar Grange who had a son David Roger born in Bendochy  12 Feb 1735.

I have searched the records held by Scotlandspeople and have been unable to find any links.  I would be grateful for any ideas for further research.

You should obtain "The Scottish House of Roger: With Notes Respecting the Families of Playfair and Haldane of Bermony", by Charles Roger, published in 1875. It deals with the Roger family from Bendochy, Errol, Coupar Grange etc, though sadly not my lot in Little Dunkeld and later Airntully, which must tie in somewhere! The book takes the family back to a William Roger, born in Coupar Grange about 1475. The family worked as baillies at the abbey prior to the Reformation in 1560, and is quite well documented.

William Roger and Janet Gellatly are listed in the book, and a couple of years back I researched William's siblings and ancestors for someone else, and will happily e-mail the relevant part of the tree to you, which I have partially corroborated from additional sources, including the original rental rolls from Coupar Abbey. This William was noted as having been previously wed to a Margaret Wright, with whom he had a son and four daughters, before marrying Jean, who was from Lethendy, and with whom he had three sons and a daughter. William was the son of George Roger and Catherine Bissett - I was looking at the family on behalf of a descendant of their daughter Janet ROGER. I'm afraid I don't know the names of William's and Jean's children, but the info may help with naming patterns etc. Just PM me with an e-maill adddress and I'll happily send it.

FYI, the name in Perthshire varies from Roger and Rogers to Rodger, Rodgers, Rodgie and Rogie - the latter two affecting how it was pronounced in Perthshire some time past. Information on my own branch is located at http://chrispatonscotland.tripod.com/id39.html.

Chris - thank you so much for your reply.  I would very much like to receive the results on your research into the Roger family of William and Janet.  (I will PM my e-mail address to you) I do in fact already have a copy of the book you mention as well as a similar volume called “Four Perthshire Families – Roger, Playfair, and Haldane of Barmony” by the same author published in 1887.  The two books cover much the same ground.  There is also another book “Roger Tenants of Coupar” by James Cruikshank Roger published 1879 again giving much the same information.

Sadly none of these sources have yet been able to confirm my theory that my fourth Great Grandfather David Roger was the youngest son of William Roger and Janet Galletaly. In fact in the book “Four Perthshire Families” it does say that the David Roger in question died young, (but this comment is missing in the first of his books) but of course there is no source for this assertion and could be a throw away line.  I suppose if it was correct then the death records of Bendochy would be able to prove it.  However I have been unable to find out if such records exist.

I looked with interest at your family roots in Little Dunkeld and later Airntully and will keep these in mind in my research to see if I find any links.

Best regards

Hi Keith,

Yes, Four Perthshire Families is the other book which I also used - the person I was researching for was a member of the Playfair family. There won't be much new in what I have, but I'll send it anyway in case you can establish the connection to William. Having slight problems on my computer just now, so it will be later tonight before I can get it to you!
