Conundrum
« on: Wednesday 08 April 09 14:19 BST (UK) »

Hi

Hope i can pick some brains.

In 1854 Mary Ann Todd marries,aged 24,Dad John a bricklayer,at Brighton.

I have Mary Ann on 1841 & 1851 with Mum Mary Ann,born Sompting & Dad John,Bricklayer cant make up his mind where he was born.

On the SMI & IGI i found a marriage for John Todd & Mary Ann Kelly
24 May 1829,St Peter The Great,Chichester.

Rightly or wrongly assumed this to be right.

I have just received a birth cert for Sarah Ann Todd,13 May 1839 ,it gives Mums maiden name as Graves.
Sarah died at the age of one.

Something does`nt add up

I have looked on SMI for a Mary Graves marrying a John Todd, nothing.

I have Mary Ann Todds death cert,1866,wife of John Todd,Bricklayer Journeyman.

Does anyone have access to Sompting PRs to look up a baptisum for Mary Ann,please.

Grateful for any help.

Looks like one of three scenarios
a) There are two or more couples John and Mary Ann Todd, one where MAry was nee Graves and they had a child Sarah who dies, and one where the Mary is nee Kelly, and then either they have a child MAry Ann, or that is a thirs couple.
With names like John and Mary Ann this is not out of the question.

b) These are all the same, and MAry Ann married twice, hence maiden name Graves, but a previous marriage to Kelly

c) One of the records is wrong!

Did the family with "your" Mary Ann  in, on 1841 and 1851, have any younger siblings born after Civil Registration?

Or John and Mary Ann didn't marry in Sussex.  Huh

What are the birth places given for John?

Living in Brighton .

On the 1841 John is born of County.

1851,Lincoln

1861, Windsor Huh

I have phone Register Office to double check,Marys MN Graves.

On Ancestry i found  a christening for oldest daughter.
Mary Ann Todd,22nd Apr 1827, Brighton.

Mum & Dad John Todd & Mary.

I just dont know where to look for a marriage for this pair.

I have searched SMI but had no luck.

Mary Ann died 1866.

John died in The Workhouse in 1877.

As yet hav`nt found him on 1871.
