Icklesham Lookup Please
« on: Thursday 09 April 09 01:16 UTC (UK) »

I am trying to find Harriet! She was living in Undercliff, Hastings with her husband, James Webb in the 1851  census. (James born Warehorne, Kent in 1827) We can't find a marriage, nor a birth for Harriet.

She was born, according to different records, between 1819 and 1824, with most records showing 1821 or 1822.

If anyone is able to look for any possible Harriets in Ickleham in that time period it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Dunc

Hi AMBLY
I should have said that we believe they went to the US in 1854, settling in St Louis, Missouri by 1860

Hi Dunc

There are 15 Harriot/Harriets born in Icklesham between 1818 and 1827.

Somehow I think we need to trace the marriage to track down her surname.

Do you have any idea who Alice Wheeler age 10 on the 1851 census was?

Might she be a clue.  It says visitor but was she a niece or daughter by first marriage perhaps??

Hi
I've been away for Easter, sorry for the slow response.

On Ancestry.com there is a record for Alice Wheeler christened 16 Jul 1841 in Hastings, daughter of John Wheeler and Sarah. It is possible that John or Sarah is a relation of Harriet, but we have no Wheelers in our tree.

In regards to the marriage, on FreeBMD there are about 35 James Webbs who married a Harriet(t). None of them are in the general localities of Hastings (1851 residence), Icklesham (Harriet's birth or adjacent Kent (Jame's birth).

I was hoping to find a match between the Icklesham Harriet baptisms and one of the James Webb marriages. I have looked at all 35 marriages, and found no obvious connection to Icklesham - eg 1841 Census.

Thanks

Hmm a difficult one

Sadly none of the Icklesham Harriots were a Wheeler either.

Dunc,

Given the lack of much other evidence (especially Harriet's marriage) I'd suggest finding more out about Alice Wheeler.  Kerry makes a good point about her perhaps being a niece or other relation.

You don't have Wheelers in your tree, but then you don't yet know Harriet's maiden name.  Neither do you know the maiden name of Alice's mother.

Assuming the mother is Sarah, wife of John Wheeler, it's probably worth trying to find her in the censuses to see if she came from Icklesham, and if so to find her maiden name from her marriage record.

This is the best the SMI has to offer (I couldn't find a likely marriage after 1837 at the FreeBMD site).

Place: Bexhill, East Sussex
Date: 15 Sep 1819:
Subject: John WHEELER
Spouse: Sarah SHOESMITH, (B)

This would make Alice a rather late child, but not impossibly so.  Also it would make Sarah quite a bit older than Harriet, but they still could be sisters.

Does the Icklesham register have a Harriet Shoesmith with the same parents as a much older Sarah?  Or can we find a more likely marriage for John Wheeler to a Sarah?  Or other parents for Alice?

Just some ideas for investigation.

Hi Stovepipe
Thanks for the Wheeler suggestion, which I hadn't discounted, but was hoping for a quicker solution. I agree it is now worth further investigastion.

It now strikes me that Harriet may well have been widowed. If she is widowed, and born in Icklesham, then I need to find a marriage for one of the 15 Harriets to one of the 28 surnames on the list of Harriets who married James Webb. Do you have that list Kerry?

One more thought was the widow living at the same address, Harriet Everest. She is of the correct age to be Harriet's mother. Is there a Harriet Everest born in Icklesham?

The possibility exists that she wasn't actually born in Icklesham, but perhaps moved there as a very young child. That makes her almost impossible to find. In other words, just harder!

Thanks

Thanks everyone for all the lookups and suggestions.
Unfortunately, none matched up, so it seems as if Harriet will remain a mystery!
She had no children, but who knows, maybe one day someone researching Harriet's family may come across this post..........

Cheers
