John OPIE - famous painter, possible relation ?
« on: Monday 19 January 09 11:50 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,

As some of you who have followed my various threads may know, I spent a weekend in Cornwall this weekend looking into my family history. I discovered some old news paper cuttings in my Grandad's sister's house and one of the cuttings (most of which are about my family and local Newquay events) relate to John Opie (born 16th May 1761) a famous painter.

Detail here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Opie

I'm pretty sure he isn't in my dierct blood line but wonder whether he is a relation through being a brother to someone... ?

I have got as far back as Joel Opie (1799) but struggling to work out if there is a link as I haven't got back any further. John married Amelia from Norwich and lived in London from his early 20s til he was buried so pretty sure no direct blood line, but still interested in whether there is a link ??

Does anyone have any ideas where I can look to work this out or does anyone have access to info that may give me more hints ?

Thanks,

Paul.

Hi Paul,

In all fairness it has only been a few days! Oppy is a very common name, and you are hoping to find a connection between people from two different areas of Cornwall. If a connection even exists it will not likely be easy to prove.

Firstly, I have been unable to substantiate the 1761 birth in St Agnes. You may need to visit the CRO or alternatively hire the St Agnes Records in to your Local LDS Family History Library, and see if you can spot the baptism yourself. I believe the baptisms are not in very good condition but when you know who and when, you may just spot it yourself where others have been unable to transcribe it. I can see

Edward OPIE = Mary TONKIN 27 Dec 1747 St Agnes

IGI Submitted suggests his parents were Edward and Amelia Tonkin so perhaps the baptismal entry is there (possibly illegible) so has not been transcribed anywhere.

Without more information it will be impossible to tie him to your family. There may be no connection at all - your family may simply have been impressed with this mans achievements and kept the article wondering like you if there was a connection. Everyone likes to find someone famous in their tree.

Looking at your own side I can tell that

Joel OPPY was baptised 8 Jan 1799 Stithians parents Joel and Jemina (possibly privately and received into the Church 13 Feb 1799)

Joel OPPY = Jemima COLLINS 10 Feb 1798 Stithians

Joel OPPY was baptised 7 Oct 1774 Stithians parents Christopher and Eleanor

Christopher OPPY = Eleanor TREVILIAN 25 Jun 1761 Stithians

The further we go back the harder it becomes. I think Christopher may be the son of James baptised 14 Nov 1737 Stithians. James appears to have been baptised 30 Oct 1709 Perranarworthal the son of Christopher. There is a possible marriage for Christopher in St Gluvias (around the same area as Stithians and Perranawarthal) Still not seeing a St Agnes connection.

That's excellent info, cheers Kris. Didn't have anything past Joel so great to be able to get slightly further back :-)

Thanks again.
