« on: Friday 10 April 09 00:24 UTC (UK) »

I am researching an Ernest Woolley possibly born in 1901 who possibly married a Kate or Catherine V Carter in Mar 1921 in Basford district. I am trying to research this family into the 1800's. According to freeBMD there are a few Ernest around the early 1900s.

I also have the names with maiden name Carter of Frank WA Woolley born Dec 1921 qt, Stanley E Woolley born jun 1926 qt and John James B Woolley born 1933

If anyone could help me I would really appreciate it

cheers

Hi Richard,

I'm afraid this looks like a case of getting the marriage certificate to check Ernest's age and father's details  Undecided

Tati,

Thats the obvious thing to do but eventually I would like to get the marriage cert first for John James B Woolley marriage as that should give the Fathers name.

This info is what I have found on completeBMD on ancestry.co.uk and freeBMD.

I would like to make sure I find the right person before I commit myself to buying a cert for the Ernest one. I might try putting the request up on the Derbyshire board as well as it relates to Ilkeston as well.

cheers

I now have the marriage cert for Ernest Woolley & Kate Victoria Carter which was at Ilkeston parish church in March 1921, they are both aged 19, one a miner from Cotmanhay, Father's name William Woolley also a miner.

Kate Victoria Carter lived at 24 Burr Lane and her Fathers name was William Alfred Carter who was a china dealer. One of the witnesses is Sarah Ann Woolley.  Assuming these are the right people I am looking for more info on a William Woolley and William Alfred Carter. Is it worth putting this on the Derbyshire board now?. Other than looking on the 1911 census can anyone help with this one please?.

cheers

What a shame they were both too young to be on the 1901 census.

The free 1911 census search helps pinpoint Kate's family:
Parents William Afred Carter born ca. 1871 and Kate born ca. 1867 as well as brother Alfred Headley Carter born ca. 1897.

If only I could see William and Kate in 1901 or identify their marriage!

Still, I'm pretty sure I've found brother Alfred in 1901, which at least leads us to William Alfred's family:

1901
RG13/2819 25 42
Smethwick, Worcestershire
76 Cape Hill

James Henry Carter, head, 27, Auctioneer? China Dealer, b. Cannock
Louie, wife, 26, b. London
Alfred, nephew, 4, b. Derby
+ 3 servants

Tracing this James Henry back to his parents and siblings

1891
RG12/2249 104 10 & 11
Walsall, Staffordshire
61 Upper Rushall St

Samuel Carter, head, 42, China Dealer, b. Staffordshire Brockmore
Sarah A, wife, 45, b. Yorkshire Bradmore
Alfred, son, 19, China Dealer, b. Staffordshire Brockmore
James Hy, son, 17, China Dealer, b. Cannock
Isaiah, son, 15, Harness Maker, b. do.
Pheobe E, dau, 13, b. do.
Walter, son, 5, scholar, b. do.
Mary M, dau, 3, scholar, b. do.
Ruth Clark, serv, s, 19, General servant, b. Kings Hill Wednesbury
Sarah A Carter, dau, 11, scholar, b. do.

Back in 1881, this Alfred was called William (and born Brierley Hill)

Now as far as Ernest is concerned, the 1911 census shows two Ernest Woolleys age 8, both in the Chesterfield district. Not sure how to determine whether one of them is yours, but if you have a play around with the search feature, you'll possibly find out that one of them has a father William Ernest born ca. 1875, a mother Florence born ca. 1880 and sisters Alice Maud born 1901 and Gertrude ca. 1906.

I'm not 100% satisfied that there doesn't seem to be a Sarah Ann though.
