Joseph SAMBELLS and Mary HARDING
« on: Friday 10 April 09 10:59 BST (UK) »

I'm wondering if anybody out there can help me?

I'm looking for a marriage of a Joseph Sambells and Mary Harding.

I know that they were living in Morval in 1841 with Mary's mother (many thanks to Kris for that info).

I've tried the usual suspects Cornwall OPC, FreeBMD and the IGI Index but to no avail.

Thanks for your help ladies but I don't think it's her, from the records I have Mary was born, married and died in Morval.

It's a problem I'm constantly coming accross in my search for the Sambles family, in that there appears to be two clusters of them, one in the Stoke Damerel area in Devon and the group that I'm interested in just north of Fowey and south of Liskeard.

It's looking increasingly like I'm going to have to view the Parish Records when I'm on holiday in Cornwall later this year.

Thanks again.

Just a coincidence that there is a Joseph S and Mary H in the same list in 1840 in Stoke Damerel then.

Oh shucks.

Let us know the answer to this one.

What records tell you that Mary was married in Morval just out of interest ?

Hi FizzyB,

Family word of mouth, never that reliable that's why I'm checking it out first before I cast it in stone!

The only circumstatnial evidence I have to date is that she was born there, they were living with Mother-in-Law in 1841 and their first daughter was also born there! Still not enough to be totally sure.

I've made contact with the Morval and Duloe Parish Clerks to see if they can help me.

I'll let you know what happens.

I have been in touch with someone who has a marriage index for Stoke Damerel and they say that the 1840 marriage there is for a

Mary Harding and Joseph Sannals

So very coincidental that two couples of the same names married in the same year .........

Fizzy

PS  lots of folk from Cornwall wed in Plymouth.......

Hi Fizzy,

Nothing yet, I only sent the e-mails last Wednesday so I'm not expecting anything for at least another week. I'll let you know when I do though.

Hello Ladies,

A quick update for you.

I've just had a holiday in Cornwall and spent some time in the County Archives while the Mrs went shopping! Also went to Morval church and met the Warden who gave me a tour and pointed out where most of the family were burried.

I went through all the Parish records within a 50 mile radius of Morval and found no mention of Joseph and Marys marriage, I found all the Baptism records for them and their children and their death certificates.

From this It looks likely that Fizzys suggestion is most probably correct and I've ordered the Stoke Damerel certificate for 1840. The reason for the SD wedding could be that she could have been upto 4 months pregnant as their first child Jane Ann was baptised 23 May 1841.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Rarararararara for Fizzybubbles who may be right - hahahahaha.

Did you "feel" anything on your journeyings.

I went to Philleigh to see if there were any stones for my Retallick family but zilch. The graveyard has partly been made into a wild garden to encourage butterflies etc.

As I walked along the path from the lych gate to the church door, I could almost "feel" the family walking along to the occasion days such as baptisms. It was very nice.

Of course then no-one wanted to work in Cornwall or live there as it was so poor. Look at the prices of house there now !!!!!

Cant wait to see if the MC is right.

Fizzy,

Funny you should say that but I walked straight to Marys parents and brothers graves in the middle of the churchyard!

I always feel relaxed and at home in Cornwall even though I'm a miserable Yorkshireman! I try and spend a few weeks down there every year. This was an unplanned visit, my wife has just been made redundant and I'm not that busy at the moment so, we just packed a bag and drove down there.

I found lots of references to family I didn't even know existed and raided the family photo collection before my father could say anything for scanning and attaching to the family tree.

Have you tried the Cornish Family History Society? I joined on Monday and spent a couple of hours in there looking for the Sambles, Honey's, Warnes and Searle's.
