Hi there!
Is there anyway i can find out details of a marriage certificate without having to order it? I am looking for James Barbour who married Jessie Weir in Krugersdorp on 12 September 1907........
I have tried to find James on the passenger lists as he is from Scotland, but without any idea as to when he arrived i have had no luck. I do know that he left SA in 1908 as His son was born in scotland in that year.
Any help would be appriciated.
Thank You !

Hi again Diedraebarb
Have you thought of starting a new thread in RootsChat, Scotland, Lanarkshire?
My suggestion is that you start the thread there, as Glasgow which is in Lanarkshire, Scotland, was so often used as an embarkation point for Scottish emigrants to South Africa.
Head it something like, "Look up please, JAMES BARBOUR, Scotland-South Africa?
Personally, I've received such amazing and kind help from all folk in RootsChat, and can vouch that in my thread in Peeble-Shire, Scotland, the help has been amazing!
Do, please let me know how you get on, and if you want to message me in Personal Messages, please do.
Cheers
Danchaslyn

Unfortunately he has a common name for Scotland and there is no way for Scottish Rootschatters to help without more information. All that is known about James is his year of marriage. It would be helpful if his marriage certificate gave his age and parents names.

I beg to differ, Dee. Try my suggestion, finding him on shipping lists for someone well versed in that expertise, would not be difficult. Also, Scottish Rootschatters amazingly helpful!
Please don't be discouraged. I currently live in Scotland, myself, have had decades of association with the country and I've never found Barbour to be a common name here, haven't ever known of one personally here, but, strangely, did know of a Barbour family or two, or three, in Kloof, South Africa!
You know yourself, its not difficult to work out a rough age for him, and a rough year for his travelling.......
Cheers
Danchaslyn

On SP there are approx. 16 births for James Barbour in Renfrewshire alone between 1870 and 1890 with no way of confirming the right one without at least one parent name.

Ooohhhh, well done, Elaine447 and Sancti
I knew you could do it! You aren't veteran RootsChatters for nothing.
Diedraebarb, that surely has got you off to a good start. Wait until someone helps you with your passenger shipping lists and your thread will fly...........................
Perhaps someone will help you find the son now? James Barbour's son, b. Scotland, 1908?
cheers

Hi There
I would like to thank all of you for all the help you have given me. My mind is going round and round with excitement.
I have followed up the lead with regards to James Barbour and Sarah Brown, Their son James Barbour marries a Jean Wood Johnston in 1900 and they have a daughter Margaret in the same year.
I will definetly follow up all the other that you have kindly listed.
A big thank you for the marriage passage that was found. I have however one question on the original birth certificate of James Barbour born 1908 it said that James and Jessie got married in 1907, why did they sometimes get the years wrong?
Once again thank you to all.
Regards
Diedrae

diedrae did James and Jessie have other children just wondering if they may have followed the traditional naming pattern if there were more children you may be able to narrow it down a bit Elaine
