Glebe House 1833
« on: Wednesday 03 June 09 13:32 UTC (UK) »

I have just discovered this was the abode of my GGG/grandparents in 1833 when my GG/grandfather was baptised at Longbenton but am struggling to find any information about Glebe House using my usual resources.

Could any one offer up a suggestion as to where I could look for further information on Glebe House.

I doubt that house on Google maps was built and known as Glebe House in 1830s because a house that size would be listed as an address in the directories and no Glebe House is listed in any directory for Northumberland prior to 1850 (I haven't checked later ones).

I looked in historicaldirectories.org

Thanks all for your replies.

Michael, my ancestor was William John Cairns. He was the only child in his family to be baptised at Longbenton, his fathers occupation was recorded as husbandman which suggests to me his father Matthew was likely an employee at Glebe House.  The family had moved to Earsdon by the time of the baptism of the next child in 1835.

Here's a candidate for Glebe House. The word "glebe" refers to land that was given to the church.  " Glebe" land usually retained it's name though the ages.

Modern day streets in Longbenton area i.e. Glebe Villas etc are situated at NE12 7PS.

Using the Durham CC Mapping ( probably one of you usual resources) and searching on that post code shows that area of Longbenton. Then clicking  back from Modern Day to 1850s, the map reveals a building(s) called Benton Glebe ( lying between Forest Hall and Killingworth Colliery.)

The Church Records section of Longbenton Parish within the GenUKI site shows the burial of a 7 month old John Banks who lived at Glebe House

( William John Cairns bapt is also there as 25th August 1833)

Glebe House appears in the 1841 census occupied by a master tailor. Next to it is Benton Glebe farm which probably includes the share of the enclosure of Killingworth Moor in 1793 which was allotted to the vicar of Longbenton. The rectors of Longbenton were absentees during that period and the church was served by a vicar. It may have been originally the vicarage. Forest Hall is a modern settlement built on part of the moor. As Michael says there are several Glebe street names on the edge of Forest Hall nearest Benton. The farm is still there in the 1851 census but not the house.  Often unwanted former gentlemen's houses were used to house married farm workers like your forbear. Gentlemen with residences in more salubrious counties often preferred to live away from the coal pits and colliers who furnished their incomes.
