Matthew Gill
« on: Friday 10 April 09 22:24 UTC (UK) »

Searching for Matthew Gill born approx 1835 in Ripley England & died approx 1888 in Belper Derbyshire. We believe he was married to Lois Hurst (Wright) born 1834 in Kilbourne England. They had 1 known son Henry born 1865 in Belper.
Henry married Elizabeth Ratcliffe & they had 2 sons George & Gordon before emigrating to Canada approx 1889.
Gordon was my Grandfather so I have the information from the Canadian side but would love to get some additional info from England
We think that Henry's parents were Luke Gill 1797-1843  from Nottingham + Elizabeth Wall.
Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading this & have a terrific day!

Hi

Do you have a copy of Matthews marriage certificate which would show his fathers name

This is the 1841 Ripley census entry for Matthew.  The gap in ages between John & Matthew could suggest that Elizabeth may be a second wife.  All born in county (Derbyshire) except Luke

Luke Gill 40  framework knitter - not b Derbyshire
Elizabeth 40
John 15
Matthew 5
Oliver 4
Mary Ann  2

Thanks for the info Carol - that was quick! No I don't have a marriage certificate for Matthew
The 1881 census has Matthew 43, Ripley
                                   Lois 42, Kilbourne
                                   Henry 18, Belper
That is about all the info I have from England at the present. Again thanks for the info.

1861 for High St  Ripley - I have checked the 1841 again but cannot find Mark.  I wonder if he is "Oliver" as there is nothing for Oliver after 1841 and no death/marriage

Elizabeth Gill 64  b Notts
Matthew  25  b Ripley

I can't find them on the 1871 at the moment nor can I find a marriage on freebmd

There is a Matthew Gill marriage in the June qtr of 1863 Basford and there are an uneven number of male/female names on the same page.  I have checked the full GRO index for both Lois Hurst and Lois Wright but there is no corresponding entry

I checked the 1851 census and she appears to have been Lois Hunt - the 1881 has her b Kilbourn Derbyshire 1838 but again - there is no Lois Hunt on the full GRO index for the June qtr of 1863

Deaths December qtr 1888

Carol - Again thanks
I have also heard that she was Lois Hunt (spelling mistake on the census?) Perhaps she wasn't married to Matthew, who knows. Family rumour has it that she was a bit of a tart in her day.
By the way I love the cat picture - gorgeous! I take it she (he) was yours?

Hi

There's one way to solve it.  You can order a copy of the 1863 marriage entry but put a condition on the application that you only want it if spouse was Lois (don't put a surname)

You must fill in the reference checking sheet which is accessed by pressing the reference checking button near the bottom of the page,  and fill in all the fields that you would like the entry to be checked against before you press the 'Submit' button

If it's the wrong one - the GRO will only charge a £3 search fee

Marriages June qtr 1863
Matthew GILL   Basford  7b 169

You can order online at

www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

If you find they did marry - you can write out 100 times - "My great great grandmother was not a tart"

Too Funny!!  I'll make the elders of the tribe write it out!
I'll maybe give that site a try & see what I can come up with. Thanks again!

I am trying to fill in the form now & they asked for a GRO index # for the marriage. Do you know what this might be?

Hi

The marriage that  Carole W found for the June Q 1863 is this one

Matthew Gill & Ann Gent 03.04. 1863 at Selston Notts.

I noticed that Luke Gill married Elizabeth Wall in Selston, so there may be a connection.

Carol (the other one)

Hi

That marriage in 1863 was as shown in my reply above

Quote
Marriages June qtr 1863
Matthew GILL   Basford  7b 169

However - the other Carol appears to have found the marriage and it wasn't to Lois so DON'T send for that marriage cert

When I checked IGI marriages - I only looked in Derbyshire - that'll teach me!!

I've just checked the 1871 for Matthew and Ann and they were both b Notts - Bagthorpe and are also both on the 1881

What is perhaps odd is that Matthew was also a framework knitter but so were a lot of others on the same page.

Hi both Carols,
Got your messages today & I hadn't sent for the marriage cert yet. It will surprise me if anyone finds the marriage because we have looked beofre & there doesn't seem to any trace of it.
Thanks for your help!!!!!
