Samuel Baillie born ~1859
« on: Saturday 11 April 09 16:34 BST (UK) »

Samuel Baillie was married in McKelvey's Grove Presbyterian Church in 1889.  In the 1911 census of Belfast he states that he was born in Co. Monaghan and born around 1859.  His father was William Baillie, farmer.
In Griffiths there are two William Baileys (spelt this way) - one in Tullycollive and one in Dromore.
Can anyone help point me to the nearest church in each case where I might find Samuel's baptism?

Hello,
I have nothing on Samuel but my gg grandmother was Barbara Bailey (Baraba Baillia) born Nov 1815 in Belfast.  I don't know how exact that place of birth is.  Barbara married William Spence on Mar. 27, 1832 in Templepatrick, Co. Antrim and after having 9 children (that I have found) she emigrated to Canada in 1864.
Any connection?? I don't have Barbara's parents names although I suspect William's father may have been Finlay Spence. Barbara and William had their children in Toberagnee, Co. Antrim and they were baptised in Lylehill Presbyterian Church.
Do you think Barbara's marriage certificate would have her parents' names on it?

Peggy,  I don't think there is a connection, as Samuel Baillie didn't move to Belfast until the 1890s.
You will have to rely on Church records for Barbara's marriage and it MIGHT give her father's name, but not her mothers.  Do you know what church she was married in?  RosemaryJoan

Hi,
The family was Presbyterian.  Is there more than one Presbyterian church in Templepatrick in 1832? Sorry, I live in Canada and have never been to Ireland.

Peggy, Yes there were probably more than one Presbyterian Church in the Parish of Templepatrick.  I think you should put a message on the Antrim board of Rootschat and some of the people with local knowledge will let you know the names of the churches.  The only one I know of is Templepatrick Presbyterian, the records of which are in PRONI (Public Record Office of Northern Ireland)
www.proni.gov.uk
They will do a search for you for a reasonable sum.

Hi RosemaryJoan,
Since we last spoke, i have learned that the church was the Non-Subscribing Presbyterian Church in Templepatrick and I have written to the minister who has replied and will do  a look-up for me.  So here's hoping something interesting comes of it.  Thanks for your suggestion though. That is a backup plan.
