there are a couple of Jackson's living in Dingle on the 1911 census..

  http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Kerry/Dingle/Farrannakilla/105378/

one of the people listed (Catherine Jackson) is 68 - so born around   1843. Could she be connected to Thomas in some way ?

Catherine is a widow, and with her daughter Lucinda seem to be guests of a Dingle Church of Ireland minister..

Hi Shane,
Thank you for the reply.

My Jackson family are connected to the Custom & Excise/Coastguards from the mid1830's to 1870(in Dingle) prior to Dingle it was Achill Island Mayo.

Thomas Jackson snr was the Chief Officer in Dingle till his death in 1870.
His 2 daughters married and settled in County's Clare /Limerick,one of his sons John Nugent Jackson came to Liverpool (am from that branch of the family),its only recently that this other son Thomas Jackson has "appeared" born in Dingle 1838(which fits in with Thomas Jackson snr being stationed in Dingle).Am trying to establish that Thomas jnr is part of the same family.
Thomas jnr died in Antwerp 1874(he was a Master Mariner).

Cheers
Dolly.

I have a Coastguards/Custom & Excise ancestor around the same time. As far as I know he only served on the east coast.

I presume you've seen this Burial Record data from the Coastguards of Yesteryear website :

Jackson,Paul     14 mth   18/3/1843   Of Thomas Jackson, Chief Officer C.G.   Dingle

  Jackson,Susanna     16yrs   9/3/1849     Of Thos.Jackson. Chf.Off.& Susanna   Dingle

Hi,

Thanks for the Coastguard Link - I do have that info on the children that died .
I have a full service record on Thomas the Coastguard from when he first joined the Custom & Excise (no mention of where he was born!)I also have full service record on this son John Nugent Jackson(came to Liverpool, joined the Merchant Navy).
Its this poss other son Thomas jnr who has thrown my research a little ! -before I pay out for a Service Record on him,I want to check if I can locate his Baptism & hopefully confirm who his parents are .

Cheers
Dolly.

I've the same problem with my coastguard ancestor, Samuel Hodges. I have his partial service record - but no idea of his place of birth. We have one possible mechant navy record showing someone of that name before his coastguard service. Place of birth on this is Bristol .. but the year of birth seems to be off, ...maybe he lied about his age to join up. The only other clue we have is that is father was a glassmaker named John Hodges.

I found a Jackson Coastguard entry for Co. Mayo in an old Irish Almanac (c 1829) - I think the first name was John. If you are interested I can post the details.

edit : should mention that Samuel served on the East Coast of Ireland.. Dalkey, Lambay and from 1850 on the 12 gun Brig. Pelter.

I don't want to hijack your thread Dolly, but saw that yourself and Shane have both mentioned Customs & Excise Officers - I have an ancestor, William Huggard, who was a Customs & Excise Officer in Antrim, Limerick, Kildare and Wexford, from c. 1840s onwards.  Do either of you know where I can get any information on his service?   I have checked your link Shane and did not find anything relating to my ancestor.

Apologies again for jumping in on your thread Dolly!

Hi jaylay,

I obtained my Samuels service record from records at Kew, they are in Adimiralty ADM series Records. I paid a London based researcher to do the work.

I'll have a look in the Almanacs and directories for William Huggard and let you know if I find anything.

Hello Shane,

Yes Please  Smiley,I would be interested in the Coastguard Entry from the Old Almanac you have.

Jaylay: Feel free to add to this post -
Just as  Shane did, I to paid for a London Based Researcher in the early 1990's and a update in 2007,the records being held at Kew London, the place of origin/birth for my Jackson is not to be found in the records !.

Prior to paying for a researcher in the 1990's ,there was a lady who lived in Essex area that had collected a large card index on the Custom & Excise,my Jackson was on that index with a few brief details !(not the place of birth!),I dont know what happend to the lady(she was elderly,I dont want to post her name should she still be living) or her index,am sure I have found some reference to the index on the internet.

I will do some searching on the net and see if I can the info again .

Cheers
Dolly.

Thank you both for your input - I am considering doing some research at Kew myself.  I have William's place of birth (Co. Kerry) but would love some more information on his father Martin - do you think there is any chance a service record of this kind might give any information on this?  What can I expect to find?  I suppose we should all be grateful that our ancestors were in occupations that at least left some paper trail  Smiley

from Treble Almanac & Dublin Directory-1829

  Coastguards/Collectors, &c of Customs

  Ballina
Prin. Coast Officer and assist. Collector , John Jackson esq

from list of Coastguard officers in Thoms - 1850

Thomas Jackson    C.O.     Bandon   (Chief Officer)

no sign of any Huggard entries yet... but these lists only include officers, so other ranks (boatmen etc) are not mentioned ..

I've a few other sources to look though yet - will post updates as I go..
