Hello,

Shane: Thanks for the extra info - I have looked over my researchers report again,he is not listed at Bandon Station, however he may gone there as a temp CO perhaps and it was never logged on his service records.
Thomas retired in 1850,he remained in Dingle till his death in 1870,he is buried in St James's Church,I visited his grave early last year, there are a few other coastguards buried there,I will have to find my notes and post the names.

Jaylay: I found on the West Middlesex FHS web page a mention of the Coastguard index,I have emailed the Sec requesting details etc.

Cheers
Dolly.

I don't want to hijack your thread Dolly, but saw that yourself and Shane have both mentioned Customs & Excise Officers - I have an ancestor, William Huggard, who was a Customs & Excise Officer in Antrim, Limerick, Kildare and Wexford, from c. 1840s onwards.  Do either of you know where I can get any information on his service?   I have checked your link Shane and did not find anything relating to my ancestor.

Apologies again for jumping in on your thread Dolly!

Jaylay

just to let you know that the ADM 175 series of Coastguard records are now available for free download from the National Archives at : http://nationalarchives.gov.uk/
The documents are in PDF (Adobe Acrobat) - and note some are very large files (800Mb).

I have already downloaded most of the Irish files - and had a quick look for William Huggard, but didn't find anything. Let me know if you want me to have a more detailed look .. maybe if you had a few approx. dates for his various locations..

Hi Shane

Thanks for that - I have tried to find that Coastguard list on the website but cannot seem to find it.  Could you possibly post a link to that part of the site for me?

The approx dates/locations for William Huggard are: c. 1842 - 1845 Bushmills, Co. Antrim.  C. 1846 - somewhere in Co. Limerick.  C. 1848 Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford  c. 1851 Kilcock, Co. Kildare.  These are all the dates and locations of his children's births.   He was a Customs & Excise Office, not sure if that is different to a Coastguard or not.

I appreciate your help - thanks Shane

I am not sure if Excise Officers would be listed in the same ADM 175 series of documents as Coastguards - similar excise/duty functions but a different type of location. (I'd forgotten you mentioned Customs & Excise and thought Kildare was a strange place to locate a Coastguard!)

I'll have a look the files I downloaded ...just in case William is mentioned

The index to the documents is :

 http://www.rootschat.com/links/06gw/

(click on the ADM 175 to expand the list)

also details on the ADM series at :   http://www.coastguardsofyesteryear.org/articles.php?cat_id=7

To download the files go to 'Documents on line' section :

  http://www.rootschat.com/links/06gv/

and enter the document code e.g. ADM 175/18 in the 'quick search' box on the top left, and click the search button. The next screen shows you the details of the document. To download it you add it to shopping basket  using the button on the bottom right (the ADM 175 series  shows a price of  0.00 ).

The UK National Archives has other many series of documents which are not free - you have  to order a quote for these, and after you accept this they send you a scan.

Thanks Shane

I am trying to download that document (seems to be taking AGES - although I know you said it's a huge file).  When it's done I'll have a scan through it and see what I can find.
Thanks again for your help - that National Archives Uk site is full of interesting bits and pieces.
