Gent - Bulwell
« on: Saturday 11 April 09 22:54 UTC (UK) »

I will hopefully be visiting Bulwell on Easter Monday to see where my husbands Paternal family started. I know that some of the Gent Family were Baptised at St Mary Church Bulwell.

I am hopefully going to look around the churchyard but wondered if anyone could tell me if the church would be open and if they have any records there and of anywhere else I might be able to get information.

I believe there could still be Gent's living in Bulwell which could possibly be relatives.

Thank you for replying Jane, I have been onto the link and sent them an email.

I also have the Notts Cd's and I have access to IGI microfiche for Nottinghamshire but wanted to go to Bulwell to see where they originated and to go round the churchyard.

Hi

I understand how you want to go to the churchyard just to stand there and feel how it was. I have relatives who came from there as well. Daniel Comery died in 1781 and was buried there and his family also.

I hope you have a fruitful journey. Although I live in Nottingham and have worked within half a mile I have not been to the churchyard yet. There is lots of information about old Bulwell on the internet if you need help contact me.

Can I just warn you Jane the Graveyard is extensive and rather rough ground. I did not find any of the ones I was looking for but did not get all the way round.

I have had an email from Fr. Andy Nicolls from the church and they are hoping during the Summer to record each grave and get the information on a database, I have asked him to let me know if they get it done.

We were actually rather disappointed as there was nowhere open other than Pubs, Supermarkets and bookies. I was also expecting Bulwell to be a Villiage and it was more like a town.

Then to top it all we get home and my husbands stairlift has stopped working!!! waiting for someone to come and see to it.

Hi Christine

I am amazed you didn't find any as there are 62 Gents listed on NFHS burial CD for Bulwell St Mary.

The following article on Bulwell mentions John Gent being recommended to be the first postmaster and George Gent was lame with a woooden leg.

http://www.nottshistory.org.uk/articles/mellorsarticles/bulwell1.htm

Also this one

http://www.nottshistory.org.uk/articles/bulwell/victorianbulwell.htm

Also the old school:

http://www.nottshistory.org.uk/whatnall1928/bulwell_grammar.htm

And lots of articles listed under Bulwell:

http://broxtowehundred.co.uk/menu.htm#n

For the BMDs press ctrl and f and a little box will pop up. Type in Gent and it will go through the list highlighting each one in turn.

I hope these help.

Thank you for the websites Jane they are really helpfull, on the BMD's I have found some information I did not have and I have only been on Baptisms and not got through them yet.

I did not get far round the Graveyard as it is a bit rough and I am disabled but hopefully if the do get the records of the gravestones in a data I will be able to get information from that.

I do have the Baptism, Marriage and Death Vier V3 cd's from Nottinghamshire FHS but haven't had chance to study them properly yet.

Thank you for your help

Your Gent's just caught my eye!

I went around St Mary's churchyard today looking for Cooper graves but I did see several GENT memorials. The name Gent always jumps out at me as it is in my Dad's tree (Pinxton area).

If you'd like me to go back at some point and take photos I'm more than happy to do so.

Hi shory_rach that would be great if you could  Smiley it would be very much appreciated.

Something caught my eye in your list of names you are researching the name Allsop, can I ask does this name come in the Gent side of your family?

The reason I ask I have a Anne Alsop (realise it is spelt slightly different) b.1830 who married Jacob Gent in 1849 at Sheffield. Jacob was born 1826 Bulwell.

Hi

If you do go back and happen to spot George Gent 1825-1867 - (wife Ruth died 1863) I would be interested. He is great grandfather of Edith on the left.

Don't go out of your way, though

Thanks, Tricia

custard_pot It'll be a pleasure to take pics for you. Should be going back in a couple of weeks, weather dependant of course! Also hoping to look round the Northern Cemetary (which is HUGE). Would you like me to keep an eye out there as well?

Allsops figure in my Dad's side of the family but from the maternal side, not paternal. My Allsops seem to be concentrated around Hucknall Huthwaite and Sutton-in-Ashfield but I'll let you know if anything turns up that contradicts me!

'Tricia Will check when I'm there, can't offhand remember the names!
