Trying  to find gggrandfather and mother Francis Devine who married Margaret Bonar 15 May 1859 at Lifford Co Donegal trying to ind out where they came from.

You dont say if you have their marriage certificate/details yet.
If not, then that should be your first action, as without fathers details and residences at the time of their marriage, it will be difficult to be sure any record that is found is actually your ancestors.

However, if they married in a Catholic ceremony there will be no marriage certificate as registration of Catholic marriages in Ireland began in 1864 (other marriages had begun registration in 1845).
Index to Irish civil registrations is online on LDS Pilot site. Check for bride and then groom and cross reference details for same registration district, year, volume and page number.

Thank you, I don't have marriage certificate I got the details from their daughter's birth certificate.  They must have left Ireland and came to Scotland sometimes in the 1860s.  I will follow the link and see if I can come up with anything

This Donegal Resources website is the best one that I have found with a decent amount of information on Donegal

You may need to look in Strabane as well (its in present day Northern Ireland) as prior to independence there was no border.

First thing to establish is whether or not the marriage is listed in civil index (link given earlier). If so, you can order the marriage certificate which will list details like date and place of marriage, residence of bride and groom, occupations, their fathers' names and occupations, whether or not of full age  and names of two witnesses.

If the marriage took place in a Catholic church before 1864 tehn there will be no certificate and you will need to search for the church record (if it exists). The details in church records vary greatly so it's hard to know what information might be listed.

They were catholic, so no certificate registered.  Also no match on LDS.

While they may have both been Catholic it is worth checking civil index in case they got married in Registry Office (more common than many people realise).

Have you tried AskaboutIreland griffiths valuation, go to places search or people search and put in the imformation you have and names and places should come up.

There are no listings in Griffith's Valuation for Francis Devine in Co. Donegal (and only 12 Devines listed under Co. Donegal) and there are several possible reasons for this. Griffith's is not a census it is a valuation record and only lists head of household. If Francis was living with father, inlaws, etc. then his name won't appear.

The 12 Devines listed in Griffiths are all living within a few miles of the place where the marriage took place.

Yes, and it's quite possible that they might have been related but still doesn't prove a link to Francis Devine.

Lifford is in Clonleigh Parish

The records of Clonleigh R.C. parish (which includes the town of Lifford) cover baptisms 1773-1795, Jan. 1836-May 1837 and 1853 forward, and marriages from 1778 (with enormous gaps).

Thank you for all you replies.

You have been really helpful.

I think Frank was most definately a son.  Frank's first born was Hugh my great grandfather and his siblings  James, John and Mary ~ There is one strange thing.  Margaret and all the family have a middle name "Aluna"? baffled.
