CROY, Jane Mudie - Orkney to NZ
« on: Sunday 30 August 09 21:01 UTC (UK) »

Have been reading a book about Longbeach & surrounding districts in Mid-Canterbury NZ & came across the above.

CROY,  Jane Mudie
Born: ?Orkney Islands Scotland
Married: John MILNE b: Kincardinshire Scotland, in 1883 Ashburton NZ (this was John's second marriage). He and his first wife Margaret CAMERON dau. of of Duncan and Flora Cameron nee Stewart, were married at Barry, Forfarshire in 1868,  &came to Lyttelton NZ aboard the "Geraldine" arr. 27 Dec 1874 with two children - John was a champion ploughman in Scotland.
Father:  Robert CROY
Mother:  Margaret unknown (both of Orkney Islands )

Jane was the sister of William and James CROY of Ashton, Mid-Canterbury NZ. They were adherents of the Flemington Presbyterian Church, Ashburton County.
Jane had come to New Zealand in 1881..

John MILNE died in March 1896 at Ashburton NZ from apoplexy, aged 47. He is buried at Ashburton with his first wife & children.

Jane had predeceased him on 15 Sep 1895 and was buried in Waterton Cemetery Ashburton County NZ.

Children of James & Margaret.
1.  James b: Scotland
2.  Flora b: Scotland
3.  David b: Courtney  early1875
4.  William b:  at Longbeach Nov 1878 - died from scalding 13 Jan 1880 while mother was out milking.  Apparently the eldest son took a billy of hot water off the hob and somehow William got in the way and died from the scalds a day and a half later.

Margaret, John's first wife, died 27 Feb 1881 during a dysentery
epidemic aged 32.  Because of the dysentery, a daughter Mary was born prematurely and died 14 day later.

Hope that helps someone.
