John Samuel Greenwood - 1881 census
« on: Saturday 19 February 05 11:08 UTC (UK) »

According to family history my grandfather, John Samuel Greenwood, was born in Todmorden (then Lancashire) on 8th May 1877 but I can't find him anywhere until he shows up in the 1901 census in Aberdeen, having joined the Gordon Highlanders.
Can anybody out there please find him prior to that date ? We believe that his mother may have been Mary Jane Butterfield but his father is a gray area !!
Help please !!
Regards,
Barry Emmott

Hi

Sam (John) Greenwood abt 1875  Walsden, Lancashire, England Grandson  Todmorden & Walsden
Wendy

Undecided That is certainly a contender, Wendy, but I'm not convinced. What was the address for this one ? There were so many Greenwoods in Walsden and Wadsworth at that time the place must have knee-deep in them !!! Some years ago we visited Heptonstall which is the same area and the graveyard of the old ruined church there was full of Greenwood gravestones !! I hadn't realised they were so prolific. Please let me know if you turn up anything else,
regards,
Barry

Thanks for the suggestion of the cert but I'm sure the John Greenwood you found (and there were a hell of a lot of them) isn't the one because although we're uncertain as to the year of my grandfather's birth we do know that his birthday was 8th of May. There is a family story that his true father was a member of the Fielding, or more likely Fielden, family of Todmorden. Apparently when he was a young boy he was collected from time to time in a coach from the big house and taken to see somebody there but nobody thought to ask him more and all those who might know have died.

Barry
