boat families
« on: Thursday 16 July 09 21:45 UTC (UK) »

Hello looking for a bit of help, managed to track my great, great grandad george jacques ,his birth date is 1816 in wem shropshire,in his early life he was a boatman and later on a master grocer,we can't trace him before the 1851 census ans some one suggested that he may ahve travelled around on the boat and therefore be difficult to trace! Are the any site specifically for boatmen and there families!! any help would be great.
                                            many thanks Jake

Hi
Welcome to Rootschat.    There are a number of Rootschatters with boating roots and some will contact you.

A member of my family has put together a website -   www.canalboatmenandwomen.co.uk

which although is still under construction does have a fair bit of information on it.

You will find that the boating families, although they moved about, can still be found on the census - although you may have to look at several counties.   Which other families are you interested in?

cheers

Do you have any details of Georg's wife and children?

Many thanks for the advice!!! George was born 1816 and was 45 in the census of 1861,we now think he may be in the 1851 census, but under george jacks(in later census he is jacques)he is down as being born in wem shropshire, and later married elizabeth,he live in shropshire, stoke and natwich were he later become a master grocer,he has two children annie and thomas who were down as being born in chester and the rest of his kids are born in auldlem and stoke.they are rueban, jessie and george! There is a George Jacques born to a Joseph Jacques and ann Jacques in 1816 in warickshire although it is hard to find a direct link. But there is a anna jakes living in1851 cesus who is 73,with george, elizabeth, ann and thomas, the ages fit although the name is spelt differently. Is there a canal link between warickshire and shropshie? sorry for waffling!!!

Hi

I have trawled through the censuses but cannot add to what you have already.

There were canals everywhere including Leicester and the workers - particularly the young men did move about.   I have found my people on censuses from several counties.

If you can add anything else to the information you have do let me know and I will have another look.

cheers
