Does anyone have access to the Mellor Records who could check on the possible birth and parents of a Theodacia Whiteley born around 1798?
She's proving a major brick wall for myself and several other folk all trying to locate her details!
Many thanks Mike

Hi,
I found something odd (which you may already know!). A Hannah Whiteley was baptised 1 aug 1820 in Stockport her age given as 26 and born 1 aug 1794, her parents Joseph Whiteley & Theodacia Whiteley. I thought it was interesting as your Theodacia (married name Washington) was in Stockport - perhaps Hannah was her sister and she too was baptised later in life?

Thanks Junev - yes I have seen that baptism, and I think it may have been connected with Theodacia's marriage to Silas Washington in 1820 - perhaps a conversion just before the marriage?
I would so like to be able to get something a little more clinching in order to accept Theodocia and Joseph as my Theodacia's parents! I am 99% sure they must be, but something niggles away that they may not be!
Oddly, there was another Theodacia Whiteley baptised in Liverpool in 1827 with parents Henry and Ellen Whiteley, but I don't know if that was an adult baptism or not. But it does seem the combintion of Theodacia and Whiteley wasn't too uncommon!

Hi again,
If you have a look at the census (1851 2190 303 19) Henry Whiteley is born in Mellor in about 1793 - this is the one with the daughter Theodosia (though not on the census) as they also had a Margaret born 1827, also baptised Liverpool, who is with Henry & his wife Ellen and a daughter Mary Ann 1825.

Many Thanks Junev - I had dismissed the 1781 marriage as rather early for a 1798 daughter, but those other births do significantly bridge the gap! I rather suspect that once my chores are done, I will be chasing these leads up as far as possible today- your finding of Hennery in the census was something that hadn't even occurred to me - and definetly brings him into the loop!
Do I feel the mortar of a brickwall starting to crumble???

Yes - that could explain why my Theodocia's baptism isn't recorded: if her father died whilst her mother was pregnant, Theodocia the elder might have had to move elsewhere - or perhaps couldn't get the baptism without the father being present?
I think I'll try and find the Bartlett's and see if they were in the area... perhaps Theodacia went to stay with her family?
This is really quite exciting

Glad it looks like a lead - her age at least shows it was possible for her to marry in 1781.
I'l keep a look out for more.
