Hi - I'm trying to find info on my great grandfather, James Barr. Particularly details of his parents. This is what I know: James Barr, 1879-1944. Pawnbroker / jeweller in Londonderry. Catholic. At some point lived at 2 Ellwood Terrace, Derry City. Married Margaret Josephine McLaughlin 1886-1966. They had 15 children: Katie b1906 William b.1908 Thomas b1910 Andrew b1911 James b1912 Mary b1913 Joseph b1914 Annie b1916 Marcus b1917 Brian b1925 plus 5 others who may still be alive.
Thanks James

Hi and welcome to Rootschat
Do you know if he was actually born in Londonderry or just lived there after he married Margaret
This is just a possibility from the IGI at www.familysearch.org but you need somebody to find him on the 1901 census and if you are lucky - he may still be with his parents.
A copy of his marriage cert should give his fathers name
James Barr Birth: 26 JAN 1878 Londonderry Father James Barr Mother Mary Diveney Barr

Carole - thanks for your help. I dont know where he was born but I believe the family have been in the Londonderry area for a while. I checked the familysearch site and found the record you provided. He must have married around 1905. Best wishes James PS This is a reply to your 1st post

As Carole said, you nee the marriage certificate to confirm his father's name.
James Barr married 1906 Co.Derry to Margaret J. McLaughlin.
Index to civil registration gives the details need to order the marriage certificate: James Barr- marriage- Jan/Mar 1906 Londonderry registration district volume 2 page 244 Margaret M'Laughlin- same as above

Sorry for the delay getting back to you Mary. Thanks for the information. I just need to get a copy of the marriage certificate to get the geneology ball rolling again.

Hi Edenreaghbeg - thanks for your help. I'd be very interested to find how far back your wife's late cousin got with their research. Best wishes

I did finally get a copy of the marriage certificate (via EmeraldAncestors). James Barr's father was William Barr (pawnbroker). Unfortunately - that is all I have. So I now need to find a William Barr born around 1849-1859.

Not sure if there's any connection here but am including it as it mentions a James Barr, pawnbroker- "Probate of the Will of Andrew Barr late of Tullans Coleraine County Londonderry Farmer who died 20 January 1907 granted at Londonderry to James Barr Pawnbroker." see www.proni.gov.uk for more details.

aghadowey - thanks for your help. In looking for a William Barr born around 1850s I did come across a William John Barr of Crosscanly, Aghadowey county Derry, born in 1858. But he seemed to be Protestant so I assumed he may not be related. The person you found lives nearby. Tullans could be Tullans farm near Coleraine.
Do you know if marriage across the religious divide did happen in the mid 1800s?
John Barr, William John Barr's father, also from Crosscanly, was born around 1832.
PS I changed the 1st post to remove the names of some people who may still be with us.
