Blackhall/Noble marriage - completed
« on: Monday 13 April 09 11:03 UTC (UK) »

I have in my tree an Alfred John Blackhall who  allegedly  married a Williamina Noble 25 Aug 1905 @ Fraserburgh. Unfortunately I can't find any record of this marriage on ScotlandsPeople so I suspect that although it took place it may not have been in Scotland. I have Alfred's parents and date of birth so am happy with that info, however according to my informant Alfred and Williamina were cousins.

The big question is does anyone have a Williamina Noble in their tree that might fit

Alfred was born 1876 @ Fraserburgh and was 29 at the time of the supposed marriage, another clue to the marriage taking place elsewhere than Scotland is that I can find no trace of him on the 1901 census, although I found the rest of his family

I also have Alfred's death allegedly happening @ Fraserburgh in 1940 but again no record on ScotlandsPeople

Thanks in anticipation

Monica

Thanks for that

I think it is quite likely to be him as I only have one Alfred J in all my data

I may have found him/them on the 1920 US census as I found an Alfred J Blackhall (b abt 1878) and a Wellimmina (b abt 1886) at Queens, New York. I suppose at some stage I might get around to taking an Ancestry.com subscription to check this, but at this moment I'm trying to track backwards rather than forwards

Hi Jim

You could always ask for a census or ship's manifest (to try to pick up on their crossing) look up on the Emigrants to US board here on RootsChat in the meantime.

Shocked That was a quick find!

I can see from Ellis Island not his original exit to NY but a further trip he took returning home to NY. Definitely your man  Smiley

Alfred J Blackhall, returning home to Saganore Ave., Hollis, NY on 12 June 1921. Alfred shows as born in Fraserburgh, as does wife Williamina. I am guessing here. Alfred shows a previous trip out in 1902. Wife shows as having gone out in 1890. Probably a marriage in NY?

Have a look, I use this site as a front end search engine for Ellis Island records, makes it so easy http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ellis.html

Williamina shows as aged 37 and 4 months, so born c. 1884. If her family left Scotland in 1890, may explain why you haven't been able to pick her up in the earlier censuses in Scotland. There is actually a birth showing in Fraserburgh in 1883 for a Williamina Noble, which I would imagine is hers and would let you confirm her family and her connections to Alfred's family hopefully.

You are a gem!!

I've had a look at some stuff I got years ago on Ellis Island, I found the 1921 trip and also one in 1909 on the California out of Glasgow

Now that I've got an age for Williamina I should be able to track her parents down and find out if the two of them were cousins as I was told

Thanks again for the help

Monica

You are a DOUBLE gem!!

Went to the ItalianGen web site and found Alfreds death, more or less the same date but definitely not the right location, also found a 'naturalization' entry for what might be Williamina/Anna in 1931. That site is now in my favourites. I don't tend to go to far with Blackhalls that have emigrated but that looks to be a handy site for tying up loose ends

Once more thanks a million

Problem solved

Williamina Anderson Blackhall b 23 Aug 1883 to Alexander Noble & Jessie Anderson

Alfred J Blackhall b 1878 to John Bisset Blackhall & Eliza McBeath Anderson

Eliza & Jessie are sisters b to William Anderson & Jane Stephen

I think I can mark this completed!!
