« on: Sunday 14 June 09 08:45 UTC (UK) »

Hi,
Problem needing help with please. Samuel Hood (widow) married Emma Leah Allan (spinster) aged 37 -13.05.1883 parish church Islington. Her father recorded as George Allan (deceased) farmer. She appears in 1891 census rg 12 161 94 5 under the name STROOD aged 46 born BREDLOW OXON??
1901 she appears rg 175 60 15 aged 56 born High Wycombe Bucks. Samuel died aged 60 in 1905. Cannot find the birth of this Emma, death or remarriage, or on 1911 census.

Any help with this lady greatly appreciated.

Hello John

There is this birth registration

Births Mar 1844  ALLEN  Leah    Wycombe  6 446

and this corresponds with an entry in the 1851 census for a Leah daughter of George living in Horsenden (Wycombe Reg District).  George is an Ag Lab.

I will try to trace her to 1881.

Barbara

Who were the witnesses to her marriage?

Hi Barbara,
That looks very promising. Witnesses were a William Cook and Eliza Sheringham, neither mean anything to me.

This is the family in 1851

1851 census
Horsenden, Bucks

George Allen 37  Ag lab b Saunderton
Mary Allen 39  Lace Maker b Ilmer?
Sarah Allen 13 b Saunderton
Louisa Allen 11 b Lane End
Eliza Allen 8 b Saunderton
Leah Allen 7  b Saunderton
Sophia Allen 5 b Saunderton
John Allen 3 b Saunderton
Elizabeth Allen 6 Mo  b Horsenden

I can trace George and Mary Ann in the later censuses - they move to Ruislip.  However Leah is not with them and she is proving elusive.

There is this household in Islington in 1861.

3a Alfred Place
Martha Allen 28  Dressmaker b Wycombe
Sarah Allen 24  Sister Dressmaker b Wycombe
Anne Allen 20 Visitor Housemaid b Wycombe
Emily Allen 17 Visitor Nurseymaid b Wycombe

Could Emily be Emma Leah?

Barbara,
Again thanks for further info. I definately think the birth ref for Leah is correct. Also there is a death ref in 1925 for a Leah Hood aged 82 giving a birth date of 1843. I have ordered this certificate and will post results when received. Should you find her in 1861/71 would still like details.

Regards

John

Still no luck with Leah.

I traced Samuel with his first wife who seems to have been Joyce Calcutt. They were in Shoreditch in 1881.  I hoped this might help to lead to Leah - but it didn't.
