National Archives Kew Lookup please *COMPLETED*
« on: Tuesday 14 April 09 03:43 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Is anyone going to the National Archives at Kew?  I have looked everywhere for Deaths at Sea Records in Australia as well as on the findmypast website but keep coming up against brick walls. Then someone told me that the "Register of Births, Deaths and Marriages of Passengers at Sea 1854-1858" is on microfilm at the National Archives at Kew UK.  The National Archives Catalogue lists this Record as being part of BT 158 and access to microfilm copies is available.

I'm looking for one of my ancestors who died while on a voyage from England to Australia.  Her name was Hannah Hopkins and she was aboard the "SS Samuel Boddington" which departed Plymouth, en route to Australia in 1855.  She was travelling with her husband Joseph and four children: Joseph Jnr, Benjamin, Mary and Keturah. I have looked at the Assisted Immigrants Passenger Lists on Microfilm at my local library and it says "Wife died on voyage" beside Hannah's name.  I can't find a record of her Death anywhere Sad

I'm not sure if viewing the records is free at the Archives but I think there is a charge for photocopies.  If anyone finds anything on Hannah I'm more than happy to pay for any copies.  Hoping someone can please help me with this, I would be extremely grateful.

Hi,

Is there anyone who lives near the National Archives??  Can someone please help me with this??  I don't think I can get access to this record anywhere apart from the Archives.  If anyone knows if this record exists other than at the Archives can you please let me know?  Many thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Deb

Hi Dawn,

Just wondering if you were able to get to the Archives this week and whether or not you found anything?

Hi Deb

No sorry, I go there for work but have been in the office not Kew.

I've got your request in my bag, as soon as I go, I'll do it for you.

Deb,

A few thoughts ....  Smiley

I wonder if her death may be registered at the next port the ship docked at? I imagine she may have been buried at sea or at the next port if it was close enough.

Also I believe some (not sure if all) ships also have seperate medical reports - have you investigated this at the state archives where the ship arrived in Australia?

Hi Dawn,

No worries, whenever you get a chance.

Hi Ruskie,

Thanks for the reply. Have checked everywhere here in Oz.  Even been in contact with the Dept of Immigration, our National Archives, State Records Department (to check the ship's log) but everyone is pointing me in the direction of Kew because they say she was a British National and that it would be at the National Archives, if there was any record of her at all.  "Hannah" is leading me round in circles.  Maybe she doesn't want to be found.  Sad

Hi Deb,

Be interesting to know what the poor lady died of, I imagine that the traveling conditions would have been very difficult.

Hi Deb

I don't know if this is going to be of any help or not, but with the convict ships there was always a Surgeon on board and he kept a Journal of anyone who was sick or died. Some Journals survived some didn't.

The NSW State Records at Kingswood might be able to tell if there was a Surgeon on Board this ship and if any Journals survived, and if so where they were held.

Hi MC,

Thanks for the reply and your help with this.  Much appreciated.Smiley  Will try this avenue to see if they have any Surgeons Journals for the SS Samuel Boddington.
