Killin Birth
« on: Tuesday 14 April 09 10:24 UTC (UK) »

I am having trouble finding the birth of Peter Haggart he was born about 1821 in Killin I have taken the birth year from the 1861 census for Buchanan where he says he is 40 & born in Killin,he married Agnes McFarlane 12/10/1846 in Buchanan & died 06/05/1861 at Auchmar Buchanan aged 40.

Do you have his parents' names from his death cert.? Sometimes individual birth entries (the ones you need!) don't show but siblings' details do which at least helps you flesh out the family.

Peters parents are Peter Haggart & Janet McNaughton they married 18/01/1818 Killin,I think I may have other siblings between 1818 & 1837 born Killin,Balquidder & Aberfoyle, but can't find Peter. I have looked for census records but cant find any.

You can do a search on FamilySearch.ORG.
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true
Us the IGI from the Family history center: Region: British Isles
Country: Scotland
this will search all parishes in Scotland
Peter and Janet had 5 children.  Do not show a Peter born to them. Otherwise check out LDS microfilm for Killin Parish. McNaughton's lived and married in my surname McVean from 1500 to 1850 in and around Killin. I have 3 McVean and one McNaughon that were ministers in Killin and Kenmore. Davie McNaughton in Glasgow has much info on that surname. Hope this helps some.  David McVean

I will keep you in mind in my researching. Peter may have been born during the time that there was no misister. There were a few occasions they only had a traveling minister and records were not keep. Some in the Killin area went to the extent of having children baptised in Oban or Mull parish, especially if they liked the minister or have moved the family. So I would be inclined to check other Parish records.

Have you checked for Patric rather than Peter? back then they used those names interchangeably. Good luck
