Warnock Brothers - Immigrants in 1606
« on: Monday 26 April 04 20:46 UTC (UK) »

Looking for info on John, James & William Warnock who came to Ireland from Scotland in 1606 as part of the Ulster Plantation.  Trying to connect them back to Scottish family, to "connect the dots".   Huh

I am in possession of a letter dated 26th Jan. 1931 from a David B. Warnock of Newcastle, Pa., USA to a Rev. William Warnock of Milford Co. Donegal, Ireland. (my grandfather)
It contains much genealogical information on the Warnock family. I notice a number of people trying to trace Warnock ancestors back to the original emigrants from Scotland and then back to their origons in Scotland prior to the Plantation.

I quote below from this letter dated 1931 as it may be of interest to others.

"...................................  Originally, of course, we all belonged to the same family, but I am starting my search and making a division at in the families at the time of their emigration to Ireland, where I believe three brothers settled very early in the 17th Century, thus becoming the heads of three families in Ireland. This is a tradition, and is almost conclusively proven by three ancient burial places in Ireland, and which are in evidence today. One of these is at Whitechurch, Ballyferis, and the other at Grey Abbey County Down. Dr. Hugh A. and I belong to the Ballyferis group. There seems no question about this. Of the Grey Abbey (known as the Ballybrian family) I have not been able to get much information, for the same reason I have not been successful in your family. That is because so far I have not been able to find any one who could give me much to build on.
Now, if you should visit a very old cemetery at Dromore , County Tyrone, you will find some interesting graves -- one of which is your ancestor. This is not the grave of your original settler, but with out a doubt his sons are buried there. The original settler must be buried there, but the marker to his grave have gone the way all things material, and thus cannot be found. But this you will find on old tombstones:
      (1) ............ WARNOCK, Rahoney .......... 1688
                                 (All else effaced).

      (2)  Erected by Michael Warnock to the memory of his brother WILLIAM WARNOCK who departed this life 1691. Aged 70 years.

You see these two Warnocks died about the same time, and were doubtless brothers. There was evidently another brother, Michael, who erected the monument to his brother William. The Warnock (Rahoney) whose age is not indicated, did not erect the stone to his brother William, as he died before William, that is in 1688. William was born in 1621, and tradition has it the first Warnock came to County Tyrone in 1620, during the "Plantation of Ulster." The Warnocks in County Down emigrated from Scotland during the "Plantation," but about 1606 to 1610. One of the brothers in Down rented from Sir Hugh Montgomery and the other from Sir James Hamilton. These Warnocks we believe came from Dumfriesshire, Scotland, as many of the Scotch colonists did.
   .................................    "

Here is my Warnock line going back from my Grandfather Rev. William:

1.   Rev. William b. 1882 'Greenshields', Kilraughts (Ballymoney) Co. Antrim. Died 25th Dec. 1943 Milford, Co. Donegal.
He had 8 siblings who all emigrated to USA 1901-08 with their parents below. Rev. William married Mary Violet Barker & remained in Ireland.
2.   James Warnock b. 1848 'Greenshields', Kilraughts, (Ballymoney) d. Huh?  Married Agnes (Nancy) Carson 17th March 1875 at Kilraughts. Emigrated to USA.
3.   James Warnock b. 1808 died 23rd July 1869. Married Agnes (Nancy) Surname???   (Possibly Richards)
James was a Headmaster of the Ballymoney Model School.
4.   Unknown Link!!!!!!     Can anyone help?Huh   No.3 & 5 in this list are in the same gave as Grandfather and Grandson.
5.   James Warnock b. 1741 d. 29th March 1821 'Lower Greenshields', Kilraughts (Ballymoney).

Can anyone help with missing information and link the line back to the original 3 brothers who came from Scotland?

Do you have any further information on the Warnock family who emigrated from Scotland to Dromore, Co.Tyrone in the 1600's? We are in particular looking for the ancestors of Robert Warnock of Rahoney born around 1803.
