Belmullet
« on: Tuesday 14 April 09 17:15 UTC (UK) »

Hi.
Looking for my great grandparents. Grandparents were Thomas and Kate Carey. Thomas died in 1970 and kate died 1977 both in Belmullet. They had nine children: Sheila, Margaret, lena, Mary, Peter, Robert, William, James and John. I believe my grand father's mother may of been a Sally Barrett. Any help would be much appreciated. i am completely new to this.

A John Carey married a Sara Barrett 1888 in Kilmore RC Parish. A Tom Carey, son of John was Baptised 1889 in Kilmore RC Parish. If you check the 1901 census at http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/census.shtml enter Tallagh in the Townland box, the family should appear including a Mary Barrett (19) stepdaughter and Thomas age 11.

http://www.logainm.ie/?text=tallagh&placeID=35362&uiLang=en

The 1911 census should eventually be searchable at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/about/futureplans.html

Good luck.

Hi,
John Carey may not have been married before - unless I have read this wrongly Undecided
If you get the marriage certificate, that would give their fathers' names, marital status  and perhaps Sara/Sally's maiden name.

Hi,
There were so many Barrett's. A Pat Barrett married a Sarah Barrett in 1879 Kilmore Parish. There is a likely Baptism for Mary Barrett in 1881.

If you want to risk a few bob a Thomas Carey's birth is listed as registered in Belmullet district in 1889 (though I cannot see it on the Familysearch pilot site  http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=collectionDetails;t=searchable;c=1408347 ).

You should be able to obtain a copy birth certificate from the GRO in Roscommon, application forms are downloadable at
http://www.groireland.ie/apply_for_a_cert.htm there is no online facility. If you indulge perhaps quote date of birth 1889., address of birth Belmullet district, County Mayo, Mother's forename Sarah, John Carey Father, Farmer, and tick Photocopy which should be reasonably inexpensive.
