All Saints Church, Newcastle, 1827-1836 Completed-Thanks again
« on: Wednesday 15 April 09 16:01 UTC (UK) »

Hello

I am living in Canada and wanted to know if anyone would be willing to look up a birth and a marriage in the Parish records of All Saints, Newcastle.
There is a christening at All Saints which I believe to be my great-great-grandfather and the marriage would be for his parents.
The details I can get from the internet are:

John Shaw, christened 7 Aug 1836 at All Saints
John Shaw, married Elizabeth Hunter 21 Oct 1827 at All Saints

I know for sure that he used the name John Hunter Shaw, said he was born in 1836 in Felling (just across the river I understand).  I cannot find any other John Shaw who seems to fit the bill.  If I could get this looked up, I could perhaps get more info to go on.  I do not know if this is an easy thing for someone to do or if I am asking something huge.  Any ideas from the pros and locals?

Thanks so much for any help you can give,

Patti

Patti

You will find the marriage here http://www.rootschat.com/links/05pr/
Select Northumberland, then Newcastle on Tyne', then Newcastle on Tyne All Saints 1823 - 1830. Put 446 in the box at the bottom of the page and click 'go'.

For the baptism, go to the same site, but select Newcastle on Tyne 1830 - 1836, and enter 715 in the box at the bottom of the page.

Thanks Jennifer

That is amazing.  It's like you are the fairy godmother of genealogy.  Thanks so much.  I'm still not positive that this is the right family, but it sure seems to make sense.  Ouseburn is not Felling or Heworth, which would have clinched it for me, but he wouldn't be the first person to not know exactly where he was born.  My grandmother always told me she was born in Newcastle but I found her birth in South Shields.  I guess this common for people to put an approximation of their birthplace on a census form.
Anyway, I just want to tell you how much I appreciate your help and I bow to your superior research skills.  I will watch and learn.

I've found that sometimes people put where they remembered living as a child, rather than where they were actually born.

Have you got you great-great grandfather's marriage certificate? That would give his father's name and occupation.

Hi again Jen

Yes, I do actually.  Good point.  It does match in that it says his father's name was John Shaw and his occupation was engineman, which is the same as is on the christening that you helped me find.  I guess that is probably enough to say that it is likely a match.  Too bad they didn't put his middle name Hunter on the christening but I guess that would be asking too much.  Maybe he added the middle name himself at a later date.  One of the census forms even lists him as J. Hunter Shaw as if that was what he preferred to be called.
Anyway, thanks so much for the help.  I have been searching for him under Durham births for ages, I'm glad I finally twigged to the fact that he could have been born in Northumberland.  Duh!!!
The All Saints Church in Newcastle looks pretty.  Have you seen it in person?  I will be in England this summer and will be driving past Newcastle on the way from York to Edinburgh, so maybe I'll stop in to see the church if nothing else.
Thanks again, you have been so helpful.  This is an amazing website.  Nobody thinks you are weird for being obsessed by genealogy.

Take care, Patti

I think All Saints is now a Catholic Church.  There is a You Tube showing the inside if you do a search.  Very interesting architecture in a church especially the baptism font.

Thanks Janice

I checked it out and even left a comment on youtube.  Great clip.  I don't know whether I am more or less likely to go and see it now, but I sure enjoyed getting a peek inside.  Just thinking that my great-great-grandfather was baptized at that font with the amazing counterbalanced cover gives me shivers.  And his parents were also married in that church too.
You are all such a great community here, helping each other.  Thank-you and to Jen too.  I have been searching for these people alone for so long and now I have fairly conclusive proof that this is them and I've even had a look at where they used to worship.  Wow!  Ain't technology grand.

Take care to both of you and hope to chat again soon,

Please don't drive past. Stop off and go and look around the city - it's a fantastic place.

It is pretty "downtown" to be just driving past--best to park and walk around.  The quayside is not too far from All Saints.  Just keep going down the hill.  You may have to contact someone or arrive at service time on Sunday's to get in.

Jen and Janis

It will be a Sunday when we are in the area, but it would be later in the day.  We have to leave York at about 10 and we just have to be in Edinburgh by around supper time.  Does this leave time to see a bit of Newcastle and possibly All Saints or not?
We are used to driving long distances in Canada, but it's hard for me to judge times for driving in the UK.  Actually, I just google mapped it, and it's only 2 hours to Newcastle and then just 2 hours more to Edinburgh.  What can I see in a few hours in Newcastle, which would not be too far from this church?  Even if I saw the outside and looked at the grounds, I think it would be worthwhile, but it would be great if you guys could suggest anything else.
It would actually be much nicer to stop in Newcastle than to drive straight through as we will get to break up the drive.  We will have already spent 3 days in Edinburgh at the beginning of the trip and we fly out on the Monday morning.
Thanks for all the great ideas you two!

There are many things to see but given a time constraint I'd go down to the Quayside, walk across the Millineum Bridge.  I don't drive when I am in England.  A bit confusing for me so am not much help there.

Hi There,

It takes me 3 hours to drive Edinburgh to :eeds.  If you leave York and come up on the A1 you should only take 1 - 11/2 hours.  It then takes about the same on the A1 straight into Edinburgh.  It should give you loads of time to spend in Newcastle.  It is absoltley amazing city.  Enjoy.... Grin
