1861 & 1871 Census - JOWETT.
« on: Saturday 19 February 05 14:59 UTC (UK) »

I would be grateful for a look-up in either or both of these censuses for JOHN JOWETT (spelling variant JOWITT) and his wife SARAH.

John & Sarah were both born in Leeds - John in 1809, Sarah about 1812 - and John was a Shoemaker.   In 1851 they were at 20 East Street, Leeds with children Hannah, Kezia, Sarah Ann & Frances W.

By 1881 John had retired and they were living at 71 George Street, Shipley and had another daughter, Clara J., age 26 and born at Saltaire (about 1855).

Many thanks.

Thank you very much for that Casalguidi.   At risk of being a nuisance could you tell me if any occupations were given for the daughters please?

Hi Casalguidi,

Thanks again - yes it will be Alpaca Weaver, although in the 1881 Clara Jane is a Soprano Vocalist (Music W) - whatever Music W means!

Sarah Ann is the one causing me a problem at the moment - I am beginning to think there were two of them!   I have a Sarah Ann born and christened in 1834, but she did not appear with the rest of the family in the 1851.   From the information you have supplied she is 28 in 1871 which means born about 1843!!
