That's great news Malshie
Your patience in continuing your research when you hit a brick wall has produced a good result.

Well you shouldn't have any problems finding the name of Simon's father, the census returns indicate that he married twice.
Good luck, J.T.A.

Hello Malshie,
I was referring to the census returns for Jarrow from 1871 onwards. Simon Larkin's first wife was Mary Doudican but I can't remember his second wife as I am going by memory but I think her first name was Isabella.
Seeing you list the names Larkin and Doudican at South Shields and Jarrow respectively I just put two and two together.

So Isabella must have been a widow too as her name appears to have been McMaughan when she married Simon in 1898 and there was a step-son of that name in the Larkin household in 1901.
Did Simon's marriage certificate mention if his father was deceased? There were only two Hugh Larkins listed in Co Monaghan in GV circa 1860 which could narrow your search considerably if he was alive then.
Will look out for Mary Doudican's death.

Hello Malshie,
There is a strong possibility that Simon's father was one of the following two listed in Primary Valuation of Ireland (1860)
LARKIN HUGH CORCREEGHAGH MONAGHAN MAGHEROSS LARKIN HUGH SHANKILL MONAGHAN AGHNAMULLEN
Good luck.

Malshie,
You could be on a winner here. Even though the two Hugh Larkins lived in different parishes (Magheross and Aghnamullen) the townlands Corcreeghagh and Shankill abutted each other so the two Hughes were almost certainly related. These locations are both in the Registration District of Carrickmacross.
The Irish GRO indexes also lists two deaths which fits:
Hugh Larkin aged 55 in 1871 Volume 2 Page 267 Carrickmacross Hugh Larkin aged 72 in 1892 Volume 2 Page 320 Carrickmacross
These ages suggest either could be the father of Simon Larkin but I have a sneaking suspicion it is the Hugh of Corcreeghagh if only because his next door neighbour was a Peter Larkin. The names Peter and Simon being interchangeable.
Irish certificates from the GRO only cost 4 euro when a reference is included.
J.T.A,

Morning J.T.A.
Thankyou for your post, which made very interesting reading. although, I keep reading about the parishes and townlands I am sorry to say I still find it all very confusing to where the locations of the registrations districts are.
When you mention the Irish certificates from the GRO cost 4 euros when a reference is included, is the reference the one you quoted i.e. Vol 2 page 267 - for Hugh larkin aged 55? Sorry to ask but I am very new to ordering certificates from Ireland.
I also hadn't thought about the names Peter and Simon being connected, that was another good point you made.
I learn something new from Rootschat 'posters' about Irish research nearly every day, I am just so grateful that people are kind enough to share their knowledge with others like myself.
kindest regards malshie

map of the registration districts : http://www.rootschat.com/links/05d7/
when ordering research certs from the GRO the reference details they require are :
Name year / quarter registration district volume number page number
