Tenant Landlord Question
« on: Thursday 16 April 09 13:40 BST (UK) »

According to Griffiths for 1854, my earliest known ancestor Peter Smith was a tenant in Kilmainham of landlord Patrick Smith. But when I brought up Patrick for that year, he's listed as tenant to a Flood. Realize there were a couple of hundred Smiths in Meath at that time but am wondering if Peter wasn't 'sub-renting' from an older brother -- or even father. Was that common?

It was rare for a large landowner to have individual rental or lease agreements with the hugh number of small tenants on his land.Instead,he would let a significant area to a middleman, who would then sublet to others, who may inturn rent out parts to the smallest tenants.
