Could there have been two John Smiths?
« on: Monday 13 April 09 15:56 UTC (UK) »

According to a Government Register of Births copy, my grandfather John Smith was born to James and Rose (Dolan) of Boynagh on April 30, 1876. However, throughout his life, John noted on official documents that he was born on August 15, 1877.  Was wondering if it were possible that James and Rose named a second child after one that died in infancy? Would this have been a common custom?

It was very common for parents to give a newborn child the name of a dead sibling (sometimes using the exact same name for 2 or more children).
The fact that your grandfather said on other documents that he was born in August and the certificate is April makes me wonder if this wasn't the case.
If you could check church records you might find a baptism tht corresponds with the Aug.1877 date (and perhaps an earlier baptism for a child named John).
