Hi All,
I'm hoping to clear something up with your help. According to my family history, Mary SHEPHERD*, daughter of Peter, was born around 1806. She married Thomas MOUNT at Cupar, Fife, on 5 Dec 1824. They were Scottish Presbyterians, and had 5 children, the eldest 3 born in Scotland. In 1838 the family migrated to South Australia.
Thomas died in 1862, and Mary remarried in 1876. Her second husband was my gt-gt-gt-grandfather, Thomas EDWARDS. The marriage certificate shows Mary as being 70 years of age, Thomas as 76.
Mary died 12 July 1907. Her death certificate gives her an age of 88 years, yet surely she must have reached her centenary. It is my belief that the death certificate is in error, and all other details are correct.
Does anyone have acces to records to confirm Mary's birth and first marriage dates?
Cheers Nudge

Hi Nudge
There is one possible birth showing for Mary on IGI:
MARY SHEPPARD Birth: 23 NOV 1806/ Christening: 29 DEC 1806 Dairsie* , Fife
Parents show as Peter Sheppard and Ann Ramsay
In respect of children showing to Thomas Mount and Mary Shepherd in Scotland, there looks to be five:
1. John Mount Birth: 16 SEP 1825 Cupar, Fife 2. Peter Mount Birth: 18 OCT 1827 Cupar, Fife 3. William Mount Birth: 14 APR 1830 Cupar, Fife 4. Thomas Mount Birth: 06 DEC 1832 Cupar, Fife 5. James Mount Birth: 01 NOV 1837 Cupar, Fife
These show as submitted entries on IGI, but there are also five entries showing on Scotlands People, the official pay to view site for BMDS and Old Parish Register entries. www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Monica
* Dairsie is only two miles from Cupar where Thomas and Mary look to have married and had their children.

Thanx Monica
That's definately her - dates line up, kids names and dates line up, etc.
although only three boys migrated to SA in 1838 - I didn't know about William or James. I assume they may have died young in Scotland.
cheers Nudge

Hi Nudge
For what it's worth, I've just done a search in the Fife FHS pre-1855 Death Index for you and came up with only one 'Mount' that fits your quest:
Surname: MOUNT Abode: Abbotshall Burial: 26 Sep 1844 Relative: child Of: Thomas Mount Source: OPR 399-7 (Old Parochial Registers)
No first name given though

Aye mair questions than answers in a world where the past was a different place - that cannae be revisited! Family surnames being researched ... Crawford, Neilson, Lindsay, Reekie, Davidson Drummond, Pearson, Laing ... will do for starters but there's a whole lot more! Census information Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk
