Lambourn or surrounds: Steptoe/Johnson marriage c 1818
« on: Sunday 23 November 08 16:39 UTC (UK) »

I'd be very grateful if anyone would be able to help me to find the marriage of Thomas STEPTOE and Elizabeth JOHNSON around 1818 in Lamourn or the surrounding area or to help me to track their christening records down.

A bit of background. Thomas and Elizabeth had children baptised in Lambourn between 1818 and 1837. Unfortunately they both died before the 1841 Census leaving most of the children in the workhouse. I have the birth certificate of the child born in 1837 (Francis) and Elizabeth's maiden name was Johnson. The birth certificate and baptism records say that the family lived in Lambourn Woodlands. There is no record for Thomas or Elizabeth's baptism in the Lambourn but there is an Elizabeth Johnson on the IGI who was baptised in Great Shefford in 1802 (though it is a common name so that's not a very strong match). I am guessing that they married in or shortly before 1818 and probably in Lambourn but possibly the surrounding area (perhaps Great Shefford).

Many thanks in advance.

Hi,

I thought you might like to know that Thomas Steptoe and Elizabeth are my great great great great grandparents.
I am related through their son John.

Can I ask how you are related to them?

I don't have a surname or marriage date for Elizabeth and I had no idea that the children were left in the workhouse?

Which workhouse were they at and how did you find that out?

Look foward to hearing back.
Kind Regards

Hi!
Thanks for your message. Thomas and Elizabeth are also my GGGG Grandparents but through their daughter Ann.

It seems that both Thomas and Elizabeth died in 1840. The youngest child (Francis) went to live with his paternal aunt and uncle (Thomas Glass/Gloss and Martha Glass/Gloss nee Steptoe) and is with them in the 1841 and 1851 censuses. The next four youngest ('my' Ann, Martha, Emma and Ely) are all in Hungerford Workhouse in the 1841 Census. I've not yet been to the records office to see if there is more but looking at the Berkshire Office website I think there is probably very little from the Workhouse at this period. I've found most of the older children who were working in the area although I've not found John in 1841 (did he later marry Sarah Ellis?).

I have the death certificate for Thomas and the birth certificate for Francis (that is where Elizabeth's maiden name comes from (rather helpfully he was born a few days after general registration started).

I hope all that makes sense. Do send me a private message if you'd like to know/discuss any more.

Best wishes
