Richard RODDA - Cornwall
« on: Friday 17 April 09 01:16 UTC (UK) »

Can anybody help me. I am looking for the birth of Richard, his parents and siblings. Richard Rodda born about 1813 Paul Cornwall married Elizabeth Nichols 8 Feb 1835 Madron. They had 6 children Elizabeth Jane, James Nicholls, Emma Ellen, Mary Ann and Richard John Rodda. Richard and 2 children went to Australia in 1854 and his wife Elizabeth followed later in 1856 with the remaining children. I have information from Australia and various British Census, but can't get back any further.

couple of possibles from the IGI
batch C053401
Richard bp 25/8/1811 son of Nicholas & Mary
other children to this couple Phillis, Elizabeth, Johanna, Nicholas, Mary

batch C023411
Richard bp 5/12/1813 son of John Rodda & Eliz Jenkyn
also to these parents Sampson bp 3/10/1816, John bp 25/10/1812

John Rodda married Elizabeth Jenkin Trenwith 14/10/1811 in Paul

Nicholas Rodda married Mary Beaden 2/12/1797 in Paul

On the 1851 census, Sampson is a butcher as is a John born Paul. Yours is a shoemaker, so more likely the son of Nicholas, but I'll have a further dig.

modified - got my Roddas confused

well, Nicholas died in 1837 and left a will  http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=15977

You can order a copy of the will from the record office in Truro
http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=14713

ref you need is AP/R/4339 will of Nicholas Rodda yeoman of Paul and there should be mention of his son Richard & possibly grandchildren so you know which Richard is which.

aarrgh! sorry, got confused earlier. The other Rodda butcher I found was John, not Richard which rather spoiled my reasoning.

I checked the online transcriptions of parish records
http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/

and there's a burial for a Richard Rodda aged 12 in May 1822 in Paul. He lived in Mousehole. Nicholas was living in Mousehole in 1836, and his widow was there in the 1841 census HO107/143/10 folio 13 pg 19.

So more likely the son of John. The will would still sort it out.

ospray, Thank You so very much, you have given me so many leads to now to follow up. You are most kind. Richard Rodda has been sitting in the draw for years.
The most shocking thing is he murdered his wife Elizabeth then committed suicide. The Inquest Papers were most interesting to read, 2 of the children were at a neighbours and came home to find their mother and father.
Thank You Again

oh my!  Shocked

In that case, are the names of parents on the death registrations?

Something else that might help is getting a copy of the parish record for the marriage from Truro or asking the opc to check. Use the same order form as above. Names of fathers and their occupations aren't on marriages at that time, but the witness names might help.

There are many Rodda records in Madron on the opc search, and the 1830s ones seem to be the family of John. Likely burial for John aged 60 10/7/1838, but couldn't see a will for him which is a pity.

Opc for Madron
http://www.cornwall-opc.org/Par_new/l_m/madron.php

hope this helps.
