Hi Al
You said ... "I'm also curious why John would have moved from Lochmaben up to Balmerino. Must have been a heck of a trip in those days."
I get a funny feeling in my bones that HE WAS FROM 'HECK' ...one of the 'Royal Four Towns of Lochmaben' .. the villages ... Greenhill, Heck, Hightae and Smallholm. ... founded by Robert the Bruce after the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 ... Bruce recognised their Kindly Tenants who served in his garrison at Lochmaben Castle by granting them separate leased plots of Crown Land to provision the castle and their own familities (in perpetuity ...although they could sell their lease at any time) .... They were known otherwise as PORTIONERS.
My GG Grandfather John Maxwell Richardson (1818-1883) was, by inheritance, one such Portioner in Hightae.

Thanks DDJ

Interesting stuff. I've been to Bannockburn a few years ago when visiting Scotland. My step-daughter was/is very interested in Scottish History so we went to Bannockburn and Colladen. Was a great trip.

Cheers

Hi Al,
Your step-daughter will get an abundance of Scottish history, literature, music and poetry etc. [including articles authored or OCR'd by me] at,
http://www.electricscotland.com
Cheers,
DDJJAKE

PS
Bannockburn, where I lived in my teenage days, has many much more happy memories for us Scots than Culloden :-)
