Hi I have recently discovered an ancestor HENRY BOYLE emigrated to New Zealand in 1862 stating on the passenger list he was from Ayrshire.
HENRY BOYLE was actually born Newtownards Co Down Ireland circa 1839.
Henry travelled with Margaret Struthers and her 6 month old daughter Grace. When she arrived in New Zealand Margaret married SAMUEL BALLAGH. Margaret was born Straven about 1840.
Samuel had emigrated to New Zealand departing London Oct 1861. Samuel was born circa 1832 Grey Abbey Co Down.
Is there a kind soul who could look at the 1861 census to see if either gentleman or any other BOYLES are living anywhere around Ayrshire/Lanarkshire on the 1861 census please? Henry immediate family was Alexander b.1825, Margaret b 1840, Sarah b 1844 and Mary b 1845 all claimed to be from Co Down and all emigrated to NZ.
I am assuming Samuel & Henry had left Irelan seeking employment and then decided to venture further afield!
TIA Dale

Hello Dale,
According to Ancestry.com, on the 1861 census there are a few possibilities for Henry Boyle, born about 1839 in Ireland the most likely being in Barr Ayrshhire at No 22 East End. He is a lath splitter and states his birth year as 1835.
There is no Samuel Ballagh, but there is a Samuel Ballock, a farm servant, born 1836 in Ireland living at Meikle Bualie (probably a mistranscription) in Ardrossan Ayr at the same address as a Margaret Struthers, a dairy maid, born about 1842 but in Avondale, Lanark.
Edited to add: The 1861 census for Margaret and Samuel is the same one someone found for you on the other thread, but they only mentioned Margaret. There were a lot of people living there though none of them were Henry! Also I saw the Avondale/Strathven discussion and was pleased to see it is the same place.
Good luck with your search.

Ninatoo YOU have made my day ! THANK you! I am sure that will be my Samuel & Margaret and proves they were "known" to each other before emigrating! WHOOPEE! I had "seen " Ballock on the Index but had no way of knowing if Margaret was at the same place and couldn't decide how an Irishman pronouncing his name would sound to a Scottish enumerator!
Wow that is magic news!
May I ask if there were ANY Boyles at all at that address? Or Ceahy/Leahy surnames?
I'd love to find evidence how Samuel B & Henry knew each other before emigration! (Samuel paid the fares for Henry & Margaret to travel to NZ).
Thanks again! Dale

Hi Dale,
I am glad you are pleased. I have also had the pleasure of receiving good news from the many kind posters at this site, and another site I visit, so I know how excited you are...it's a great feeling!
No Boyles at that address, nor Ceahy/Leahy, but the other names, for future reference are Taylor (Head of household - a farm of 220 acres so that funny name starting with M may actually be the farm's name), Andrew, Lennon, Greig and Miller (household no. 12).
Chalmers, Kelso, Giffin, Clark, Sheerer, McClymont and Anderson are included on the index page Ancestry brings up, but their address is Sorbie and household is no. 13 so it looks like they are actually in a different house.
None of those people were born in Ireland except for the McClymont.
If you want to purchase the census from Scotland's People the name is actually indexed as Balloch in 'Ardrossan Old' in Ayr and the GROS number 576/01 006/01 004.

Many thanks Ninatoo! I guess it would be too much of a coincidence if the Miller was THOMAS
Now that would really have me leaping around causing an earthquake in the Shakey Isles!
I'll have to go bed soon or the ANZAC parade will have started before I sleep! Cheers Dale

Hi Dale,
No, it was an Elizabeth Miller.
I was looking for the meaning of Meikle Bualie and as far as I can make out with a quick google, in Gaelic it means Large (Meikle) Mound or Sheep Pen, depending on where you look on the net (Bualie).
And then I went to http://www.nls.uk/maps/index.html and had a look at the old maps because I once had someone find a farm on a map for me, so I thought we might find yours. And here it is in 1840 or so.

Note it says Meikle Busbie, so I am thinking Ancestry.com transcribers got it wrong. Today it is near Knockentiber, and you will just about pinpoint it if you search for Busbie on google maps.
