Stokiehill? COMPLETED
« on: Friday 17 April 09 19:53 UTC (UK) »

Hi there

My dad's birth certificate says he was born in Stokiehill in Old Cumnock Ayr.
I cannot find where Stokiehill is. I have been on the Cumnock living memory website, but so far I have had no responses. I was wondering if it could be a house name maybe? My grand father worked for the Marquis of Bute so maybe it was one of his residencies. I have also Googled Stokiehill with no luck either.
Hope someone can help.

Julie

A search of the 1901 census using an address wildcard of  sto* and searching for any family in Ayrshire Old Cumnock returns just one family at a likely appearing address...

Registration Number: 610A
Registration district: Old Cumnock
Civil Parish: Old Cumnock
County: Ayrshire
Address: Stockishill Lodge

Household consists of:
John Murray age 31, Occ:  Estate Ploughman
Euphemia Murray age 32 , wife
Barbara Murray age 9, daughter
John Murray age 8, son
George Murray age 5, son
Margaret Murray age 3, daughter
Helen Murray age 1, daughter

A search for the birth of wee Helen shows that she was registered as born at Stockiehill.

A google search seems to indicate that Stockiehill was perhaps the lodge name on the Dumfries House estate which ties in with your Marquis of Bute information.   http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/43609/details/dumfries+house//

Hi Jean

Thank you so much for this information. I would never have found this out in  a million years. My dad was born there in 1928, so he wont appear on a census we can view yet.
This can mean only one thing. I must take my rightful place at Dumfies House!

Many thanks

Julie
