I am very interested in making contact with anyone researching the family tree of William Epps born about 1881 Margate Kent, who married Charlotte 'Lottie' Brown approx 1910. In 1911 William and Charlotte are living in Torquay with Charlotte's son Reginald Cliff (or Clift) Brown. I believe William & Charlotte Epps went on to have children of their own -
Leslie Epps b 1913 Lilian b 1917 Leonard b. 1918 Doris Epps b. 1919 Edwin Epps b 1920

Dear Cheshiremog,
I am a descendant of William George Epps and Charlotte Fanny Brown of Torquay, Devon and incidentally a "Marychurch Man". I note that you are especially interested in finding out more about Reginald Cliff Brown. Perhaps you could explain precisely how your mother is related to that individual as I may be able to give you some background information which may assist your enquiries,
Les

Dear Les So wonderful to hear from you
My mother was Reggie's half sister
Reggie Cliff Brown was totally unknown to us all until I found the WW1 record of Samuel Edward Vittery Clift b. 1873, father of my mother Florence Clift and also father of Reggie Cliff? Brown. Sam named his dependants when he went to war and Reggie was named. I also have a birth certificate for Reggie in 1906, mother Lilian and father not named. My grandfather was a handsome hansom cab driver and I suspect worked for Lottie's father who was a cab proprietor. Later in 1918 Sam met my grandmother Molly Molloy and they had a another son, named Reginald. From this I suspected that the first Reggie may have died, or Sam loved and remembered his first Reggie dearly. Which I suspect he did.
I have WW1 records, birth certificates and photos which will surely make you realise we are related. I for one, would be pleased to know Reggie Cliff Brown's lineage is complete. If you let me have your real email I can send copies of these documents to you.

Dear Les As you have not yet replied I thought I would post extracts of the WW1 service record of my grandfather Samuel Clift. Finding a dependant named Reggie Cliff Brown listed was as much a surprise to me as it may now be to you. Glad to hear you are a Marychurch man - I am a Torquay maid but now live in Notts. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Dear Carol, as you may have guessed I am not up to speed with this forum lark so please bear with me. Your initial posting acted as a spur to me to get in touch with an Epps relative who I have not spoken to for over forty years - she remembers an "Uncle Reggie" who was a Milkman in Torquay. This may be the chap you refer to. I note from the 1881 census that there is a Lilian Browne, aged 3 (looking at an original of a different year, the 'e' may just be a flourish of the enumerator's pen) living in the right household to make her the older sister of Charlotte Fanny Brown (born 1885) who appears later in the 1891 Census, by which time Lilian has disappeared from that household. If so, could Reginald Cliff Brown be Charlotte's nephew ? If this is correct, I am a first cousin (once removed) to Reggie. I would like to enlist ( pun intended) your help in finding out if William George Epps, Charlotte's husband, served in WW1. How do I go about this ? I know that a Medal Card exists for someone of that name in the National Archives. By the way, I live in South Cheshire not far from Macclesfield - so I am a "Grockle" when I go back down to Devon ! Best wishes, Les

Dear Les Thanks for replying - yes I think you must be right - Reggie Cliff Brown must have been the son of Lilian Brown not Charlotte - that makes sense, as Lilian was born 1875 and closer in age to Sam Clift born 1873. Like you I can not find Lilian again either on the 1891 or the 1901. Reggie Cliff Brown's birth certificate says his mother was a domestic servant and that Reggie was born at 20 Merritts Flats, Paignton. Perhaps we should ask for help on rootschat to find her on the 1891 and 1901?
On the 1911 William Epps and Charlotte name Reggie Cliff Brown as their step-son - so I thought this meant Charlotte had Reggie before she met William Epps but I now think I am wrong. The 1911 also says there are no children born to them.
As for William Epps - I have found his WW1 military pension record on ancestry - (this is a lucky find as most of the WW1 records perished in a fire at the records office during WW2.) William did serve - service no 4750 East Kents (Buffs) - he attested in 1914 and his address at time of attestation was '3 Dellers Cottages, Winner Street, Paignton' So here we have another curious connection - when my grandfather Samuel Clift attested in Dec 1915 - Sam give his address at time of attestation as ....................'3 Dellars Cottages, Paignton' ?? I can't follow what is going on here? William Epps and Sam Clift had the same address? William Epps seems to have adopted Sam Clift's, son Reggie Cliff Brown back in 1911 ? And what happened to Lilian Brown ?
As for William Epps pension record I am happy to email a copy to you. He attested in 1914, and states he has also previously served in the Buffs. In 1915 he is wounded in Ypres and later applies for the 'silver badge' (not sure what this is - maybe a badge awarded to the wounded?) - so he is pensioned out of service due to his injuries. His record also includes a letter from Charlotte in her own handwriting enquiring about her seriously ill husband.
The plot thickens!!!!!!
Carol
