Farnham Royal - does anyone like a challenge?
« on: Saturday 18 April 09 01:28 UTC (UK) »

Hi folks,

My 3x Gt Grandmother, Sarah THUSTIN was baptized 17.1.1813 at Farnham Royal. Sarah's 7 known siblings were also baptized there from abt 1815 through to 1831 - including 1 set of twins.

Sarah's parents both died under the age of 50.

Thomas THUSTIN died 1836 age 47 (scary... that's my age), buried 12.6.1836 Farnham Royal

Elizabeth THUSTIN died 1833 age 46, buried 25.5.1833 Farnham Royal

My challenge is: were her parents married at Farnham Royal just prior to 1813 or not married at all?

I have no knowledge of Elizabeth's maiden name. I guess that Sarah raised the bairns after her mother died. One of the twins died in 1821, the same year as he was baptized.

Known surname variants are: TUSTIN, THUSKIN

This is a mega brick wall for me on this branch. I've been stuck for nearly a decade and would really love to get over the wall and make some progress. Can someone help please?

TIA.
Regards,
Candy

hi

have you asked for a search from bucks fhs, using 100year period will give you all the thustin marriages etc - i only ask as the IGI was missing a complete family, so i thought - for a marriage it had james marrying elizabeth, but in fact her name was ann elizabeth, when searching for children they all turned up under ann, so the marriage name was wrong and only seeing the originals revealed the mystery for me.

You've probably noticed that, when you search on the IGI for  'Thustin', it also brings up 'Thurston/Thurstan'. I've also checked my Oxford Dictionary of English Surnames and the following are all grouped together:

Thurstan(s), Thurston, Thursting, Tustain, Tustian, Tustin, Tutin, Tuton, Tuting, Dusting.

There is a marriage on the IGI which might bear closer scrutiny:

Thomas Thurston & Elizabeth Martin 13 May 1811 at St James, Westminster, London.

If you could get someone to check the entry, it might just say which parish they are both from.

Hi Jill,
thanks for your message. Yes, more variations are not surprising!
Will follow up on your idea, thanks. It would be good to see if that Thomas & Elizabeth were botp or not.
Cheers,
Candy

Hi, thank you very much for your help. What is a.c? Is that the source of the information?
